Not that I don't like the Columbian variety, but I really hope to see some Speckled Sussex to learn from. I love the coloring, and I hear it's quite a difficult pattern to master.

OMG Karen, you have to slow that genetic train down!Hi,
Just to butt in. Light Sussex are an eWh based black and white Columbian. It doesn't work if one tries to use breeding advice for eb Columbian black and white based birds back and forth between the 2 locuses. eWh is pure which to the skin with no black in the white areas. eb based Columbians, depending on how the color balancing is done, can have black stippling in the white areas. They also need color balancing in the under fluff, unlike the eWh birds.
Good thoughts here Walt.... When deciding how much fluff is too much fluff, the bottom line is it is too much if it ruins the shape of the bird.I am guessing that the one with the "sagging diaper" has a terrible underline at the rear of the bird. Any twisted tail feathers or wing feathers are a DQ.
Walt
I thought the same thing, which is why I suggested posting them on here since there doesn't seem to be enough SS participants...I do not know what the problem is with this thread as far as Bantams. The only difference with the two is the weight, everything should be the same.
I weighed my birds tonight. I guess tomorrow, the family and I will go out grope some birds LOL...I usually just pick up a bird and feel them right behind the legs to the vent area and can usually tell if they are too fat because they are really hefty there and it will feel rather fatty and kind of squishy. I don't know how else to describe it really.
In a heartbeat!haha I can just picture Lisa running around checking her flock and singing this to them.
AMEN!Not that I don't like the Columbian variety, but I really hope to see some Speckled Sussex to learn from. I love the coloring, and I hear it's quite a difficult pattern to master.
Walt,
Is the weird feather situation circled above a "twisted feather" . I followed a conversation you were having on a different thread and you mentioned that there were so many feathers in the tail and wing feathers. Can the above happed if there are some missing feathers or is it because the tail is pinched and the feathers are squeezing together?
If it is any help, I think this hen has a lot of cushion too.
