I don't have a lot of pictures to share. Due to bad circumstances, I'm still trying to get my breeding flock going. My only roosters right now are blue. I'm growing out 9 pure barnevelder cockerels, and 5 pullets - they are 4 1/2 months old.

This was my best hen. Unfortunately, I lost her this year while she was raising babies. I still have her mother, so hopefully when my pure boys mature, I can hatch some more of her offspring. Her legs are pale from laying. Her positives that I see are nice, high tail set, tight wing set, nice rounded underline, nice lacing. Negatives were her comb wasn't the best. Ok this hen seems to have nice wing carriage based on the ones I have seen. I see no cushioning, It looks like she might have a wide body but I am not sure about that. I am not sure on her head. Her top line seems to be rather U shaped and she has a bowl shaped underline. Her legs seem a little short but not sure.

Her mother, who used to have a straight comb until she scalped it. Found it hanging by a thread one day. Someone in the coop removed it for her. Her feathers are not in the best condition here, it was fall and approaching molting time. I like the head on this one better than the other Her top line is still somewhat U shaped but seems to be a little more balanced to my eye. Her feathers are tight to the body and her wing set looks good. She has a bowl shaped underline, however she seems to be a little flat on the lower breast leading down to the shank. Her legs are a bit longer than the hen above. and her toe spread looks good to me nice and wide. She seems to have beautiful lacing however I do not feel qualified to evaluate her coloring.

Same hen, showing her lacing:

This is one of the cockerels I'm growing out. This picture was taken when he was 3 months old. It's a terrible picture for critique, but it captures the "glow" that barnevelders have in the sun. He was still molting his wing feathers. His comb seems to be deeply serrated and tight to his head. His wings seem to be held at around the same angle as the hen's above so guessing good wing set. Has good toe spread and seems like he might be wide bodied later?

And this is a 3 month old pullet showing her chest lacing coming in: Her head looks good to me and she seems alert. I cant see her legs but going by the shape of her body I am going to guess that they are far enough apart. Is that a little bit of a cushion by her tail? She looks like she will have very nice lacing.
Wow finally finished reading this thread I have learned a lot in it about head type and what constitutes a crow head, as well as about body type and cushioning I don't know much yet but learning as much as I can before I get birds of my own. In order to keep the thread on topic though. I tried to apply what I have been learning to the birds above. I do not own a SOP yet but will be looking to get one here eventually. Wondering how I did in my attempted critique of the birds.

This is one of my 3 month old roosters born 5/19/13
Ok, from my understanding the low tail set can correct itself with age. His legs look well in proportion to his body to my eye. His head seems a bit long to me, His eye seems to be alert and his earlobe is red assuming I am looking at the right spot lol. His comb and wattles look to be in proportion to his head.

On the comment above, where you said her underline seems a bit flat, I'm virtually positive it's because of her crop popping out because if you evaluate the whole of the underline of the body, it's a nice shape. Those birds that truly have an angled keel , it's more like it's cut away... Oh, I'm bad at explaining, LOL. But they're usually skinny looking and the overall underline shape is off... I'm about as clear as mud though, LOL.

Well, now, I am new to this also, but in that picture, it seems to me that the leg toward the camera is behind the hen, who is walking, which stretches the body line, and though it looks straight, she still looks deep and I think part of the straight effect is from the crop poking out, but I might be full of it, ROFL. Just what I think I'm seeing :)

Her breast is rounded all the way down. I believe it is from her crop being full, making that area stick out more and giving the impression of a flat part in her underline.

It's a shame more breeders aren't contributing pictures/discussing this breed. I would have enjoyed seeing Barnevelders from outside the US as well.

For the Wellsummers, the outside breeders were invited to join BYC and share.

Do you know of any to invite?

I am putting up a a series of pictures of Barnevelder roosters covering a wide range of birds that have come through my pens over the years. Some are from what I consider too dark all the way to what I consider to bee too red for the American standard. Also look for different tails, white fluff, combs etc. There is no lacing on the breasts of these birds, you may detect at best a fleck of ground color here and there. There are pictured here pure Johan, KC x Ledford cross, Johan x Ledford cross. I am not going to go over which is which, I am just putting these up so the thread has some fodder for discussion.

Have at it.

Andy
