Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

She will surely be " clean" after 6 weeks!! ;) Every day after you remove the cock the fertility will gradually decline, probably to zero in 2 weeks or a month in exceptional circumstances.
I typically will wait one month, but, if you are impatient, just wait a week or so, and MOST of the chicks will be sired by the new cock. I've waited as little as 5 days after switching pens as an experiment, and the chicks were about a 50/50 split between the old and new cock. Hope that helps.

I have 8 Cubalaya males right now, good if I would lose one, bad for my wallet and the neighbors though. :)
Once I get a decent amount of chicks out some of those guys will be gone.

Thanks.

I have some polish hens that were running with my AGs. I got a rooster for them and locked them up with him on Dec 21st. I just want to make sure they are clean of the AGs before I start incubating their eggs. I just want a few of them for yard art. My hens are really old and I don't think the will last much longer.

To combine the discussion on the number of cocks and a 'clean' hen:

Each year I set up multiple breed pens each with one or two hens. I then take and match the correct cock to each pen. After I receive the number of eggs that I desire that year from each pen, I then start rotating the cocks every week to 10 days between the pens until all the cocks have visited each pen. These last chicks will contain my largest number of culls, but they have also produced some great birds.

By the way, I don't pay any attention whatsoever to feather color when I'm rotating the cocks.

i carried too many roosters this winter; 9, and would like to get that number down to 4 or 5 and maybe 1 or 2 cockerels. a hen will be clean in 28 to 30 days. we collect eggs from the breed pens and put in incubators or under broody and rotate cocks. when the chicks hatch in 21 days, you can wait one week and then start collecting from the breed pens with rotated cocks and know that the next chicks will be from the new cock. i am concentrating on feather color this year and grading. things like putting the blackest hens with the blackest cock and using bb red cubaXthai cock over wheaton cubalaya hens to get a 3/4 cubalaya chicks right off the bat. also biggest white hens to my white cock.

Made it to the Sunshine Classic in north Fla today, and it was worth the 6 hour drive( round trip). I saw 2 pairs of Cubalayas exhibited in Florida!! One of the cocks pictured above. I would not begin to talk about the good and bad points. I'll leave that to you guys. I will only say that I was surprised at how small the hens in particular were. She could not have gone 3 pounds. The cock bird seemed closer to standard, I would guess 6 pounds maybe?? The point I wanted to make though is that it was shown by a lady from Athens Georgia. I think there were some people on this thread looking for her, and I was able to get some contact info from the exhibitors list. Her name is Caroline . I also got to meet Danny Padgett. He still has a few Cubalayas, and may have some available this fall. I didn't ask anything about his lines, just a passing, quick conservation, he was busy.......stan
I just found out that this was the reserve Large fowl bird!!

Hey Gallo. What is the bird in the background? Is it a Dominique or a Plymouth Rock?
