Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Newly hatched Cubalaya chicks. More pictures to come.

Troyer,
Can you explain the different colors at hatch and what they mean? Still trying to get a basic understanding color genetics, man there is so much to try and get a grasp on

I'd like to take a poll.

What color white chicks come out the best colored adults?

I hatched plenty of chicks that you would have sworn were blue, but molted in white. They still turned yellow. Honestly one of my best whites as far as sun stains goes, was a yellow chick... go figure. And between the gray chicks, they were gray with yellow(except one that was gray with white).

This year, since I'm leaving in the fall, I want to hatch out a good number of chicks that are all the correct chick color. Then I can hatch more, and keep about 50 that are the right color to start off, then I can cull for the correct type and such.

I'm interested in hearing what everyone has to say.

at one time it was yellow chicks, but now it is the smokey gray/blue ones that seem to turn out bright white as adults.

Thank you Troyer.

Here are some new pics of my guys, they are 7 months old.

First 2 pics are my single bird from Troyer. He is the head male for sure.

This guy is from Jungleexplorer, I have two of his but this guy was the only one that would take a good pic.

Same two boys

If that is the general consensus then ill try to keep only the sooty colored chicks. That will allow me to hatch larger numbers to get those chicks. Ill be breeding from about twenty white females. Ill probably be breeding from five to seven males, some of which I will cull right after breeding. The males will be bred with each of the pens of females. My reasoning for trying this is that I have a lot of males that each individually have one, maybe two, good traits. I am having trouble choosing which traits I'd like over others, so by random combination, I'm hoping to keep only the correct colored chicks (less color traits to choose between as adults) then hope that I'll get a couple that get multiple good traits. Makes perfect sense in my mind, but we'll have to see how well it works in reality.

I like them both, but that cockerel from Vaughn is nice. You have good males to work with... how are the females? or do you have any?
