Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Here is a Cubalaya bantam project pullet. It is a color variety that used to be common in the chicken shows, but was neclected and fell by the wayside. I along with a few others are trying to ressurect the color variety once again. A very good pullet for not being purebred Cubalaya. The body type is good and the eye color is almost perfect. Eye color needs to be just a bit deeper red and the beak should be just a tad shorter.

Here is a color variety that I hoped would not show up in the bantam size. If he stays solid black where he is black, perhaps I'll have to use him anyway. Here he is as a chick...

...and here a bit older...

will be using this black cubalaya cock next year. he is a grade with 1/8 claypoole jap

Does he show any red at all?

Jimmy - it is always enjoyable for me to check in and see the progressions you folks are making with the breeding and selections done over the years. Looks like some dedicated and concerted efforts are paying off. Making strides towards specific breeding goals is always the fun part.

Took this hen photo today. Do you remember that I got her from you? It might have been a thousand years back already - my age, definitely not yours.

She still looks great, has her docile nature and may still be laying, but since she is in with an assorted flock, I can't be sure of that.

Her positive contributions to the hybrid mix I was working with are certainly evident - but she may have also introduced multiple spurs - a trait I would have preferred not to have showing up.

The background flowers are of a perennial aster plant - as much a part of the Autumn scene as the mums, gourds and pumpkins we often see.
