Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

I might have just gotten a bad bunch. I ordered 50 total (25 bbr & 25 b/r). They only sent me 14. The cockerels look like they might be Blue Gold (not B/R) and the last remaining pullet has a flat lifted (like an AG) mixed color tail. They said they are having problems with fertility, but some things can't be explained by heat; like they said they are sending me 16, but there was only 14 in the box. Two of the chicks I got had their heads bent over to the side like they had a mental defect or something. They died within a couple days. The remaining twelve, I took care of with kid gloves and they would die of no visible cause. There were a couple of decent looking B/R pullets that made it, but they were killed last month by a predator while inside the cage. Another poster said that all of their Ideal cubalayas died before making to it two years old of natural causes, and I am not sure mine will make it that long, in spite of the premium care I have given them.

I have heard a lot of good about Ideal when it comes to other breeds, but not when it comes to cubalayas. Most people's opinions that I have seen on this point is they are just about bottom rung when it comes to cubalayas. I know nothing and do not claim to be an expert, I just know my own experience was not good when it comes to the quality of cubalaya chicks. But as far as customer service goes, I give them an A+. They kept me informed through the whole process and refunded me all my money for the unfilled part of my order, even for the two chicks that were not in the box when I got it. They were nice, curtious, kept me informed and made right on all mistakes. You can't ask for more then that. When I said that I would not order anymore cubalaya chicks from them; I did not mean that I was mad at them or that I would not order some other breed from them.

When I first started I had ordered chicks from ideal. They claim BBRed but majority I got we're either splash or blue and majority of those were duckwing , including the splash. The birds were small and lacke breed character.the ones that lived were sold cheap at a feed store. Now I am skeptical with any hatchery

Well that is good to know. Guess I got lucky ordering for mid June. The eggs would have been laid well before it got hot. If I get more chickens at some point, I would have to decide if I want to add even more breeds or get more of what I have. I will keep your Cubalaya experience in mind.

As for laying, both girls laid again today. So far they are following cubalaya's experience. Start and go strong (if small)! 7 eggs in 6 days and one laid her first only 2 days ago.

Surprise! I've got CHICKS! I got a call from the post office this morning that I had some chicks. I was like, What! I did place an order with Welp Hatchery for 25 cubalaya chicks about a month ago, but I was not expecting them to get here so fast and I had received no communication from Welp that they were shipping them. Considering my experience with Ideal and Sandhill, I was expecting it to take four to six months at minimum, (if I got any at all).

Anyway, I now have 25 cute little cubalaya chicks. This is really just an experiment to see the quality of Welps cubalayas. I asked around before ordering and no one seemed to know much about their cubalayas. So I just ordered to see what they had. Now I have to get my brooder out of storage and get it ready. I am keeping them in a plastic storage box until I get the brooder ready for them. I wish Welp would have given me a heads up so I could have been prepared. What if I would have been out of town? I almost went to Oklahoma yesterday. Sure glad I decided not to. So Welp gets an A+ for speed and sending me 25 healthy chicks, and an F for not keeping me informed and warning me that they shipped my chicks.

Figured no one would ship this time of year. They are so cute! Please yes, keep us update, I would like to get some also. Just kind of sitting back and watching for now

I did not figure anyone would ship this time of year either. I thought if I ordered early, I would be the first in line next year. Oh well, guess I will be raising chicks this winter. Who would have guessed it? I will keep everyone updated with pictures (you know me, I love to post pictures).

Congrats! I hope they all turn out nicely. Hopefully you get a decent mix of genders as I see they only sell straight run Cubalayas.

Looks like one needs to be a bit watchful though. They have Ameraucana (Araucana) listed. I know some hatcheries (like Ideal) sell EEs as Ameraucanas but an Ameraucana is NOT an Araucana. Araucanas are rumpless (and to my eye, not an attractive bird).

They claim: "We breed as close to the American Standard of Perfection as possible, but do not guarantee show quality."
It would be interesting to know how close they actually get, and how good they are at sexing. Of course the minimum 25 order would be a problem for me unless I got a few others to split an order.

I have to agree the "no communication" thing rates a serious fail. Totally irresponsible.

Might have gotten a larger Cubalaya egg today, or maybe it is a Faverolle, not sure.

It is surprising how few chicks out of 25 are worthy of keeping once they grow up .

If they actually make it to full grown. Like I said, this is an experiment to see the quality of Welp's birds. Somebody had to take the plunge; why not me? I have learned from a lot of other peoples experience. I guess it is my turn to teach others through mine. Let's see what these birds turn into.
