Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

I think manfighting is more strain specific, than breed specific. I think that the hatcheries put out more man agressive birds than any other. I can verify that it is a highly heritable trait. I decided to keep a male of this sort way back because he was "my best". The majority of his sons and himself did not have a long history. I am not going to feed a bird that I have to keep my eye on, or give it away.
It is my opinion that many man aggresive birds have something wrong with them. Something is loose upstairs.

my dels are holmes , harter, and whitmore and i have been trying to get rid of the pinched tails and keep the yellowest legged ones with good size and color. eggs are extra large. the cubalayas would be a great choice for what you want to do, i can keep 2 to 3 hens with one cock year round with no problem.
the hen pictured is very nice and i would want all my wheaton hens to look like that only a little stouter and heavier. she is zook bloodline?

You looking for this?? I remember seeing pics of your Whitmore birds and they looked pretty nice. Really hard to
find good Dels. .....stan

yes, they look good. how much they weigh?

i have only had one manfighter cubalaya, they are pretty tame .

dominique and barred rock roosters were always mean even when they were handled as cockerels.

Do you want her to hatch eggs? You can break her off the nest if you want to. Otherwise, I would get here some fertile eggs to set on.

Not in the slightest. My daughter is what I call an "emotional vegetarian". She won't even eat an egg if it might be fertile let alone tolerate us eating a bird she knows personally so we can't have any roosters. Which is too bad because if I had some time (I do hope to retire without a coffin) I wouldn't mind trying my hand at helping to bring a rare breed or two back from the brink.

As you know, eggs come in 2 genders

If we gave Peep eggs to hatch and ended up with any boys we would have to find a GUARANTEED "no pot, no pan, no eat" home for them. Not ready to risk not finding that.

I gave them their scratch in the coop at roost time as usual tonight. One of the Faverolles headed for the light outside the barn door instead. I sent her to the coop then figured I better count to make sure no one else headed out. Only got to 11, no Peep. Found her in the enclosed community nest box with the plastic egg. I put her on the roost and took the egg away. Now I'm not sure if the 2 eggs I found in the radiant floor divided box were warm because of the floor heat or if Peep had been on them. I'm suspecting the latter. They seemed pretty warm given the water is only 55F. Plus, there were feathers in the box. Will have to check Peep's breast for thin spots tomorrow.

A few more pictures just for fun.

Cubalaya x Thai F1 cockerel. Nice choice for grading. Wing carriage too high and too hard feathered but otherwise nice. Hopefully next generation will correct these issues.

Brown red pullet 2012 hatch. Lighting is poor, her eyes and face are red, not black.
