Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Your blue shanked pullet is wheaten but lacking whatever it is that makes the Cubes the dark cinnamon wheaten. She will grow up to be a light Marans or Faverolles type of wheaten. I've produced plenty of pullets that looked just like her, at first, I was sure they were silvers, but, they all end up being just regular wheaten, NOT the dark Cuba type wheaten. My guess is the cockerel is similar, but, he will probably look much more like a standard male when fully mature than what the pullet will. The leg color doesn't mean much, it is sex linked, and you will see it far more in females. Also it's recessive, so it hides under the white legs for generations some times. I have seen it the most in the Duckwings, and the whites for whatever reason. I'm a little surprised to see it pop up in birds that seem so different from the Ideal duckwings, those produce blue legs all the time.

Well, I am kind of discouraged. I weighed all my large cuba males today and I they weighed a lot less then I thought. I guess they are all feathers. I knew they were not SOP, but I ecpected them to be closer then they are.

This bird I got from Jim and is about 1 1/2 years old. As you can see on the scale. He weighs 3lbs 9.8oz

This is another Zook rooster (got him from Randy) that is over 2 yrs old. He weighs 4lb 12.4oz

This one comes from a breeding of Everett's birds (by someone else) and is about 1 1/2yrs old. He weighs 3lb 7.6oz

Yet another Zook about a little over 1 1/2yrs old. He weighs 4lb 4oz

My question now is, what is my path to getting them to SOP weight? I have not weighed my hens yet but I am sure that none of them weigh 3lbs.

I think we should strive to keep the brooding/mothering abilities in the breed. But obviously not possible for everyone. And really isn't of huge benefit to those looking only for show birds.

thats the direction that we are going fowl. i will still use the incubator for sheer numbers but allow my best hens to be mothers if they choose.

i have hens that weigh as much as your cocks. they don't get there until the 3rd year. maybe they are just fat. maybe that is when they reach full maturity. pm me if you want to know about my zook birds.

My Zook birds are smaller on average. Good birds, but lacking in size. My larges is a pullet that weights five pounds. I don't know what produced a bird that large from my breeding pens, but she's a monster.

Has anyone considered an outcross to another Wheaten-colored breed in order to increase size? Wheaten Ameraucanas are somewhat similarly shaped...
