I thought so when you sent me the picture. His coloration would be more of a Brown Red, wouldn't you say? Still a gorgeous bird!

No he's actually a Black red (notice the brown in the flights) but the hackle should shade to golden and not stay the same color (maroon).

This is the coloration of the Schmudde birds. This is how he bred them and how he showed them (and won all over the country I might add).

Technically brown red should still have the flashy color. They just lack color in the secondaries and primaries.

I have never competed and have no idea how shows works, so I have a question (a lot of them, actually. But those will come later). When I was at the show in Shawnee, OK, the birds were classified into groups, such as, "Continental" and others I can't remember and don't understand. When you say that he (Schmudde) showed his Cubalayas, was he showing them as Cubalayas or as something else (Oriental or something)? I only ask this because there were thousands of birds at the show in Shawnee, Oklahoma. I looked all over and could not find the Cubalayas or even a place for them. When I ask the judges about this, I got some strange looks and what seemed like some snickers. I got the feeling that the judges felt that Cubalayas were a joke and I was a joke for asking about them.

I am just talking out of complete ignorance (lack of knowledge and experience) here; but it seems to me that if there were no Cubalayas being showed at a show as large as the one in Shawnee, that either, you would have to show your bird in another category or you would have no competition and would win by default regardless of SOP because you have no other birds to compete with. I guess because I have no experience here, I tend to question the validity of someone winning a show with a Cubalaya when there is little or no real competition. But I say again, I don't know the show system and how judging works. Like for instance, when I was at the show in OK, a woman I met there was upset with the judges because they disqualified her bird because of weight. She had the SOP book open and the weight of her bird was up to SOP, but they still disqualified her bird. I felt the judges were very arrogant and looked down their noses at everyone else. I was turned off by their attitude. I thought, "You are a chicken judge, not the Queen of England . For crying out loud! Get of your high horse and act like a normal human."

that, jungle is why i don't show. i don't go to beagle field trials either. i know a good bird when i see it and can tell a good rabbit hound from a bad one. what did y'all decide on the club? dues?
saladin, i saw both stags on uff and really like the structure on the first one. it is not bb red or brown red but black red. if i were to cross my cuba/thai cock or 3/4 cuba stags to the black cubalaya hens that i got from you, would i get this black red color?

Certain areas have more or less concentration of breeds. Being in OK the Shawnee show likely had few or none because most of us are located nearer the coasts, that's a long drive. As to bad judges, there are some, but I'm sure they never really judged good cubalayas like the ones that Schmudde showed. Cubalayas are in the category AOSB. All other standard breeds... A catch all for breeds from areas without other breeds. The English class has birds originating or created in England, Continental would be like German, Belgian or other continental European countries. Mediterranean consists of breeds from countries near the Medt. Sea. Being one of few Cuban breeds, cubalayas are entered under AOSB. I don't know why they put all the orientals in AOSB or why Phoenix were put in the class when many breeds could be considered asiatic, or the Phoenix as an English breed... Who knows but it gets pretty close to categorizing them correctly.

Come to think of it, the lady that had her bird disqualified was showing Malays. I was there to buy some Cubalaya breeder birds on the side but was hoping to score some show birds too.

On another note; I found this really interesting thread about the history of the term Malayoid over on the Asil Club forum. There are some ancient articles on their that are really a great read. One of them is a little difficult because the writer used the letter F in place of the letter S in most cases, but once you figure this out it gets easier. I love reading literature from hundreds of years ago. It gives me a look at the sociological and ideological mindset of people back then. Often I find that, people back then thought exactly the way we do now, and but for their speach mannerisms, you would think you were reading modern literature. A very wise man once said, "There is nothing new under the sun." He was right. I wish I could find some info on the term Bankivoid. Here is a link to that thread.

That I can't tell you. He's BBR to me. Where I'm from Black Red is just short for BBR.

He is just like his brother color-wise black where black should be; red where red should be; brown where brown should be. The only difference color-wise is that he doesn't go to flashy-golden per the Standard but stays the say uniform color throughout; like the BBR Malay and BBR Shamo.
