Well that's a rough decision to make... Advertised SQ from a source, or directly from the same source but cheaper... I would go with directly from Duane Urch, because I'm sure he may know better than the breeders from Strombergs, how to pick the good ones. Urch/Turland is almost the only Show bird hatchery there is, that you could get good birds from... I'd contact them and get numbers discussed as I'm sure they have a list to get on with first come first serve. I've never seen an Urch Cuba, but I've heard good things about the other breeds. If I remember the line goes back to Brush possibly, being the larger built birds of Shamo decent.

My birds are going to protest. It's been the 80s all last week, built to 102 in a day, and is still 92° at 9pm. Also there is thunder for two hours(only)tonight, possible rain. Today was 102 at 45% humidity. I'll have to watch for pneumonia and other respiratory problems as the weather progresses to change.

i too have heard some good things about urch but also some bad things.
by the way it may take you a while to get your order i have a friend who orderd some houdans to go with his and after 3 years he finally wanted his money back

I don't know the weight on him. He's not big for his age.

Very nice Jonathan! I'm trying to get away from all these flat tails but its hard, because the cockerels pretty much don't show flat tails, or they are very similar to a normal tail and I can't pick em out. But I think in two to three years my whites will be competitive with my BBReds, easily. Until then, wide low tails and fat heads are the goal. I think next year combs will be 2X better because of some of the cockerels I have picked out. Jonathan how many whites do you have running around? Blacks? Do you notice any yellowing on your whites hackles and saddles from the sun? I have two Pullets that turned extremely yellow in the sun. Keep the discussion rolling!

I have 30 whites, 20 blacks, 20 spangles, 10 blues and 35+ wheaten/duckwings plus all the grades which probably total 50 birds I will start going through/culling my whites and grades next week. I have enough whites to cull hard this year. I had to get rid of 2 decent white hens because they kept throwing offspring with white in the earlobes, which showed up on the hens in their second year. I had to cull 2 excellent typed black hens because they showed white in the earlobes.
So far I have noticed no yellowing of the feathers on the whites, but I'll take a closer look now that you have mentioned it.
