Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

i only bred this 1/2 thai 1/2 cuba cock to 3 wheaton cubalaya hens but the males were very variable; some almost game, some mean, some tame, some perfect bb red coloring, some the more mahogany bb red. all of them keep their tails down and all of them were decent sized, though. these were all 3/4 cuba 1/4 thai. will be intersting to see the 7/8 cuba 1/8 thai this year.

I might get a sneak peak in about a week. One of those black full cubalaya pullets has set up and stuck on 5 eggs. The eggs appeared to be decent in size and the girls have been laying for months, so I let her have a few. They have stayed with the dark rooster you gave us with them. I guess he is some form of BBR - what you called mahogony.

One of the chicks we hatched from your eggs looks a lot like him. He is also very tame.

Here they are on Sunday hanging out with the Jap hen that brooded them.

the grade hens look like cubalayas. i showed one to troyer with a very nice lobster tail when we were at the gilmanor swap.
the asil grades have a hybrid vigor that i never imagined.

Glad to have found this thread! I have hatched out 2 Cubalayas for a friend of mine and have a question on color. A soon as the feathes came in on the last chick, I noticed they are darker than the 1st chick I hatched for them. Do the males show darker feathers than the females right away? Can they be sexed by their feather color as chicks?
Thanks for your time.

this works for my bantams and holds true but not sure for the large fowl if it is the same are they bbred because they could be different colors too

If they are wheaten, then yes that will be the case. Males are darker and females are lighter.

I thought they were BBR's but maybe they are wheaten LF. Guess I need to find pics. This would be the case then! Thanks for the info. the 4-H kid will be happy to hear this!

I really like this breed but only raise bantams. I would be interested in some bantams if anyone has some eggs for sale. please PM me.

BBRed is wheaten in Cubalayas.

There was a time when there was the option to have them stippled(real BBRed) or wheaten. This option is uncommon nowadays but is available in bantams(especially bantams)
