Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Wow! They are so beautiful!
Thanks for sharing the pics. So many beautiful chicken breeds in the world, so little time! How do you pick what kind you want to major on?
These have been my favorite breed for 20 years now. When you just really take time to think about it and what you really like about a certain breed, then it becomes easier.

Yes, it's true. It's funny how it happens. I just began with chickens and I have a flock of ten. I am finding I am really enjoying my Andelusians most of all. I love their look and personality and this is a breed that doesn't seem popular at all!

after having kept a few breeds, you will pick the one that you like the most. until I got my first cubalayas, I thought the Dominique was the only chicken for me. other than the cubalaya, I like asils, american games, black australorps and ameraucanas. the dominiques, barred rocks, rhode island reds, and wyandottes are all good steady breeds but usually have aggressive roosters. I like tameness in a chicken.

i found that tameness in the cubalaya and also asils. the black australorp roosters that I had were never mean but not what I call tame. while they can be quite aggressive to other chickens, they seem to have enough intelligence to know who feeds them and not try to put spurs in you while you are caring for them. I cant stand a mean rooster and will not keep one here. I will give them a few chances but a manfighter can be dangerous to keep around. I eat them if they are mean. my grandchildren can walk right up to an asil cock and pick him up and he will stay calm and just tolerate it. the cubalaya cocks will jump right up on the picnic table while we are sitting there.

I no longer have any chickens or guineas...when we got birds from auction and a poultry show,we also managed to bring in disease...so we had to put our flock down about a week ago as of today...the chickens were dropping like flies for a lack of better terms. But I was wondering if anyone here had the contact information for Jim Zook? I would like to see if he still has his Malays...as well as his asils and other birds.

Oh I am so sorry for your loss! I hope you find new birds soon.
Best,
Karen
