Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

A question- we got some assorted chicks from Duane Urch and there are a few that I think might be cubalayas. They look like wheaton chicks, they are yellow with a few black specks on the down and the wings are coming in black/tan. The comb looks like a pea but I'm not certain. Do the BBR cubalayas look wheaton as chicks?

I have ventured into incubating too. Got one parked at my daughter's school with a teacher who has more experience. We set 22 cubalaya eggs and 10 mixes a week ago. We candled yesterday, so far so good... kind of holding my breath since we are so new to using an incubator.

are bantam cubas any different from standard cubas in personality?

They seem about the same to me, nice,. calm, tame compared to some things. The hatchery ones don't count as Cubas, so, don't even go there. I saw some a local show, all the hatchery ones were flighty and so horrible all were DQ'd. The breeder birds were very nice looking and very tame.

good luck with your hatches. i have set my eggs for a fifth incubation this spring. we usually do three in spring and one in fall. raising delawares with cubalayas is a challenge as the dels try to peck the cubalayas feathers off. will not raise them together again. overall very pleased with the quality of this springs hatches.

Ive never heard that Cubalayas are to have no spurs. I have hheard of single spurs but they are to be multiple spurred... and dull spurs as well. The standard of perfection states that they should have multi spurs as well.

Thanks for the info, I don't have a current standard of perfection.

Cubalaya Bantam Chicken Breed Information:
The Cubalaya Chicken is a great show bird and hard to find breed. The bird originated in Cuba. Notable features are the pea comb and low carried tail. The males do not produce a natural spur and or the spur is just a nub.
