Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Blue legs-wrong.
White earlobes-wrong.
Beak- too long
Any one thing would be barely tolerable, but 3 bad things make this bird hard to use. I would not pay or charge more than $5.00 for this bird. The tail seems nice, comb too, but, you have a lot of wrong going on there. You'd get better birds just buying from Ideal or Sandhill.

"Although that is not mentioned in the Standard, I prefer it." Gallo, a very wise individual living in the south said some years ago that the SOP could be as interesting for what it did not say as what it does. :)

what gallo said plus i don't like the comb or the saddle feathers. while you are in south carolina maybe you should contact tulip grove farm for some real cubalayas.

OK, I'm back with a "what gender" question. The birds (from Ideal) were hatched June 12th so they are now 3 1/2 weeks old. They are both supposed to be Blue Red pullets but they are colored so differently I am nervous that one is a cockerel. No evidence of a comb on either of them ... yet. Ideal does have Black Breasted Reds and Blue Reds. Maybe they mixed up an egg or two (here's hoping)

The lighter one:

Any hints on gender? And if so what specifically are you looking at that gives you a clue?

Thanks for any help you can give.

looks like 2 pullets to me; bb red and blue red. although the bb red could be a darker blue red. i can usually tell the males early by the comb.

I will not guess the sex as I do not have enough experience with the blue reds and they are still young. i will tell you a few things though-
1) Ideals blue reds is not accurate, you will not just get blue red, you will get a mix of blue reds, black reds, splash pyles, blue goldens, blue silvers, golden duckwings, silver duckwings, splash golden pyle, basically it's all the possible variations between blue and black and red and silver.
2) when you order blues, it's like any other breed, you will get some blues, some blacks, and some splash, except in this case, it will be some blue reds, some black reds, and some splash pyles. The one chick i think is a splash pyle.

Thanks guys! Unless one or both of you are gals

I'd much rather hear Ideal isn't selling straight up breed than "that one is definitely a roo based on the color difference". If we WERE willing to keep a rooster, I don't think I'd choose any of the other 5 breeds over the Cubalaya. Those are some beautiful birds.

The youngsters are starting to come into their own now. Only one hen has kept the yellow in her legs. So here's a few newer shots of the two cockerels.

I like this guy's head and size, but his tail carriage is often high
