Cup o' Joe and Tea Too

Well, we had to treat all the chickens for mites again last night. This is the first year in 5 years to be dealing with this. I think it's the new coop and not using FGDE. I used to take all the straw and/or shavings out of the smaller coops every day and put fresh FGDE and bedding in. Now I scoop these great sand filled poop boards and scoop up the occasional poop on the floor. I only change out the shavings a couple time a month. Well, big mistake. :rant

So, with everything sprayed down, including all 20 chickens, I'm going back to my FGDE. Someone on BYC finally had me convinced it wasn't helping and I was just lucky. Well, now I'm convinced it does work.

I don't want bugs on my birds!!! :rant Anyway, it was a big job in this heat, but it's done. Yay! :ya Now to bring them something cool...maybe watermelon.

Sorry about the mites Val, that must be a horrible amount of work. Hope the changes make a difference!

P.S. I just came in from giving my girls some watermelon :)

Yes, it has been a rough year, with the coccidiosis and now mites to deal with. I have never had anything like this happen before, and thought maybe those perils weren't so prevalent in the rain forest or something. Well, at least we can't go anywhere or do anything anyway, so I have all the time in the world to take care of sick chickens. :gig And there's your silver lining!

I do not use sand nor poop board no mites here :bowI have the tables they roost on but 4 lone cockerel that will be butchered in 3 weeks now maybe 5
The sand is the biggest change to my set up. Could be the culprit.

How do yours roost on tables? Are there roost bars on the table?

I don't think mites like sand. I think they like perches and cracks in the wood etc.
Thanks. That's reassuring. Nevertheless, I put FGDE in the sand, sprayed the whole coop with Pyrethrin, and sprayed all the chickens and chicks with Good Earth Poultry Spray. I'll check them again in a couple days and if they still have mites, I will spray them with the Pyrethrin. Permethrin is a last resort, but I bought it just in case. This is simply an awful thing to have to deal with. I'm so thankful we haven't had the problem before.

Like Coccidiosis, we will get rid of it and be smarter next year. :D
