Lucy 2 at 16 days old. Surly was not keen on my photographing her, so I had to stand back and use zoom.

Those mama hens are something else aren’t they! We just had some mama drama here! We were moving mama and babies to a safer place and she went nuts. But now that she has her babies back she is doing much better and is a safer place. Next time I will move broodys before chicks hatch!

Yes. Surly just had the one survive the hatch, but she is one proud mama.

The first night I tried to get them into the coop I had this experience. I thought if I picked up Lucy 2 that Surly would follow me. Instead she flew at me rooster style, like Penny's silkies. Then she frantically started hunting for her baby. It was heart breaking! I had to pick her up and put her in too. Then she settled down. But, i think that experience is why she wont even let me get close enough to take a decent photo. So, I just give her space and wait until she gets her baby in on her own. Now she goes in pretty early, about 7pm. They can sure be dramatic.

When there is one yes oh my I bought hatchery chicks 2 of them to go with a single I had..
Our feed store said they cannot get chicks right now they hatcheries are sold out

I have an incubator, so I suppose I could hatch my own, if I want more chicks. But, honestly, I just want another hen to go broody.

I looked on several sites yesterday and almost all are sold out till next year. Even hatching eggs.

Are you wanting to get more chicks? I ordered from Meyers. They are almost sold out but if you check daily, people are canceling orders so more chicks are becoming available. They aren't available long so that's why I recommend checking daily

I think Alchemist Farms still has some chicks for July but she said they arent doing hatching eggs this year. I found another small family run business the other day too. Looks like they have chicks and hatching eggs! It's called Sunset Barn Family Farm. I don't know anything about them though!
