Who stuck that egg under Surly?
Today I'll go in and take a look at them, but not sure what I can see.
so frustrating.I don't know much about mites, but what I've read about the red mites is they live in the coop and not on the chickens. They will then get on the chickens at night. So I think you have to treat the coop. I would use Pyrethrin, but if you don't mind the synthetic additives, Permethrin may be easier to find. I would clean everything out of the coop and spray it down good. Repeat in a week or two in case eggs then hatch.Have any of you dealt with red mites?I'm brooding the chicks in the coop and I went to take down the divider this morning so they can run around the whole coop. Well, unfortunately, I took down the divider and there were red mites crawling on the 2x4sWhat's the best way to get rid of them? I looked over the chicks and didn't see any on them. Should I treat them as well?
I spent so much time cleaning and repainting that coop just to have mites in there now.so frustrating.

I haven't dealt with red mites or any mites yet, so I recommend doing a search in the forums, or articles, and see what people have actually done to treat them.
So sorry you are dealing with this! But, it doesn't sound like the nightmare the regular mites could be. Hope you are able to get on top of it quickly.
I think the coop will be mite free by tonight. You just need to clean and spray it and then give it a little time to air out. Do you have a good farm store that can give you some advice?Thank you, Val! I didn't see very many so hopefully I caught it soon enough. I'm heading into town now to see what I can find. It's such a bummer. Unfortunately, I don't have another spot for the chicks otherwise I would relocate them until the coop was mite free
Good morning everyone! I made a fresh pot of coffee, so help yourselves.
Beautiful Hydrangea, Chickie! The color is very nice.
Another pretty and sunny day here. I'll be spending some time watching chickens. Time to let Lucy 2 meet the rest of the flock. Turns out Lucy 2 doesn't look like Lucy, who was a BO, at all. She is definitely a RIR.Who stuck that egg under Surly?
Speaking of Surly, she is broody again, but her eggs aren't fertile. I'll open the gates between the runs and perhaps that will be remedied.
Girlie Girl and Gertie are broody too, but they keep switching what eggs they are sitting on, according to DH. I'm not sure what's up with that or how it will turn out. Girlie Girl finally gave up on 4 eggs, so DH got rid of those. Now she is on others, but then the two girls switch places. Is this normal? Are they confused?Today I'll go in and take a look at them, but not sure what I can see.
I finally got to see them all for a bit last night. First time in a month!!! I have missed them!!!
I clearly don't have the smartest hens on the block.Awesome that you got to get out to see your flock Val! I bet you did miss them (and they missed you too).
I've heard of 2 girls sharing 1 nest and co-mothering chicks but I'm not sure I've heard of 2 girls swapping between 2 nests before. Maybe they're starting a new fad!
What are these crazy gals up to?
