I set 6 eggs today. I think all BO over LO, but we shall see. I'm sure an RIR is in the mix. I may even have a pure LO. Mad Hatter, the LO rooster, does get to mate from time to time and the LO's are his favorite girls. It's all one grand experiment after another around here.

I really need 3 more hens this year. Surly's first chick turned out to be Louie Louie. I don't know yet what these two new ones are, because they are only a couple weeks old. So, I figure I'll get 3 to hatch out of 6 eggs, and then hopefully out of the 5 chicks I'll get 3 hens. How's my chicken math?

I rescued a bunch of squirrels from my brother , he had taken them from the neighbor cat. He was sick and not caring for them. The two that had been bitten died, but the third survived and I made quite a pet from her. She had a tiny collar and leash, took her to classes in University with me. She was afraid to jump on trees, but was happy climbing people.

I'm so glad you shared that experience! So sweet. I sure did want to save that little bunny. It was barely bitten, but a bite is a bite. I think it would be huge fun to domesticate a wild bunny for a pet.

We have a lot of squirrels, and I call them pets, but they are very wild. I just make sure they have plenty of food and water. They are so much fun to watch. I do watch my kitties around them because the grey squirrels like to run around on the ground. So far, after several years, not one has been caught by my cat. And I'm talking about my big white hunter, not the munchkin. He would never sneak away with it. In fact, he never eats any of the critters he catches. He just brings them in the house and lets them go, and then watches mom run around and try to rescue them. I'm quite certain he does it because he thinks I'm bored and don't get enough exercise. The chickens have helped. He spends a lot of time out there watching them through the fence and waiting for one of my trips out to care for them. I always take some time to sit down with him while I'm there. It's his special time.

Does anyone have experience with chicken saddles? I have one hen that is missing some feathers. It is Queen Bee. When she first came back into the flock after her illness, she was not moving around all that fast, and Mad was getting to her. He is a little too rough, so needless to say, I'm worried about her little bare back. I know the feathers will come back in the fall when she molts. Meantime, how to I protect her from both Mad and the sun?

Specifically, I was wonder if the saddle interferes with her ability to have a good dust bath.

Okay, thanks. Me neither until now. I should have kept her inside until she had her spunk back, but I felt getting out with her friends was helping her. She had been in quarantine for a couple weeks. Well, I might just have to give it a try.

Hey sorry was gone most of today Hey Val my Buddy Tawny has sadles on most her girls I have never used any she said she washes them if they get too dirty they do the dirt bathes in them

Valerie, I did raise a litter of wild rabbits as a teen. I was walking through the woods and heard screaming. It was in the backyard of people I babysat for. Their dog had found a rabbit nest, and grabbed a baby bunny. I took the dog up to the back of the house and put him inside. Went back and got the babies, they couldn't stay there. So I carried them around with me in a shoe box, even to school...and fed them with a dropper. Wild rabbits make poor pets, you can't get the wild out of them, though the ones I raised had their eyes shut when I found them.
