Hens usually don't sit 24/7, so don't worry about the door. I have an option for you for humidity. ummmmm Feminine napkins! Yes, that's what said. They hold moisture better than sponges. Just thought I'd pass that on since you're so creative anyway.

Years ago one of the companies that made covered fry pans, hatched chicks in them as deminstrations. People have hatched them in their bras, in buckets left outside in the sun and NO extra heat, just all kinds of crazy ways.

When I was 12 or 13, I hatched 3 eggs in a shoe box that I had stuffed with cotton and sat it under the lamp on my night stand. I didn't even know I needed to use humidity, but 2 out of 3 hatched.

Trust me they work much better than sponges. The sponge can dry out, but those suckers hold a lot of moisture. LOL I'm not the only one that uses them for this reason. Search it on here and you'll see.

I have used them and tampons , tampons dry out faster though but you use what you have on hand right

Yep and when I heard about using them I started buying them just for hatching. LOL They work better than anything else I've ever tried. Sponges cost more in the long run, even from the dollar stores. Those packages can last me a whole hatching season.

Mother? Girlfriend? Sister? Wife? Female roommate? Aunt? Just go grab some at the local doller store or something , youll get brownie points from any girl check out lady for being nice enough to get them for whomever she thinks your getting them for .

ok i found some tampons. i had to ask my wife how they work tho. lol I opened it up and stuck it in the water pan in the incubator and it instantly scared me. That thing went from being round flat in a blink of an eye.
