Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Here's what I think. We normally suspect that if we ever made contact with aliens, it will not be a friendly meeting. This movie ends with a completely different perspective. The alien mentioned something about them needing help in 3,000 years, so they reached out to us and gave us a gift of their language and their circular concept of time.

Thank you.    Do you understand the ending?   I don't!:hu

Today we saw "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them." I had read some reviews saying it plodded along, and was "darker" than the Harry Potter movies. I was not thrilled to go but my brother wanted to see it. I also have a grudge against - I think she is the richest woman on earth(author) -because she strings out her books/movies to make as much money as possible. Something she no doubt learned from Peter Jackson with the Hobbit stories etc.
Have to admit I really liked the movie and the creatures were a nice diversion. I give it 4 stars(out of 5) my brother said just 3.

Have to mention we saw a trailer for the movie "Hidden Figures" the true story of 3 Black American women, who succeeded in crucial roles behind the 1962 space program. It's definitely on our MUST see list. It opens in January. Unless I am truly out of touch, this is the first time I've ever heard of the subject. It's hard to believe Hollywood sat on a story like this for over 50 years. I'm grateful it is coming out at all.

One of my favorite actresses Taraji Henson ( from" Person of Interest") plays the lead.

I hadn't heard either. And I've read a lot about early space programs. I'll definitely watch it.
Amazing how far advanced the Soviet space program was during the 'space race' they had many firsts including the first woman in space in '63.

Took the little one's to see Disney's 'Moana'. They loved it, good story, good animation. Great for girls or boys, of course Moana the main character pretty much a princess, other main character, demigod Maui, male, so everybody interested and happy.
During the previews before the movie though I did look over at our 4yr old boy after they played a short ad for a new 'Cars 3' movie, he had a grin ear to ear, you want to watch that? 'YEAH!'. :-D
Not coming out till next summer though. .. :-(
Good we'll be able to watch it at the drive-in though :-)

My son (who is full grown but still young at heart) and I went to see Moana together today.

For story/plot I'd give it 4 stars. Altogether fun and cute. Not the best of the Disney, but not annoying princess stuff either. (Even mocked princess stuff a bit).

As to the music...I was sorely, sorely disappointed.

So many of the Disney cartoons have really good music...this...meh. It was a lot of silly show tunes that were not great.

But sadly, sadly, sadly, they had only about 1 song that was what you could call Polynesian. With all the wonderful rich musical heritage from the Polynesian culture, they spent most of their time on juvenile show tunes.

So sad. I had hoped to purchase the sound track for a Christmas gift for my son's girlfriend as her family is Polynesian, but it lacks any kind of character.

I love movies that are richly filmed with gloriously fine music...but this wasn't one of those.

I would definitely take little ones to see it. I'm glad as an adult I went, but I wouldn't rush to see again and again.

In continuation of my thought above....

Here's my short list of films that not only have a good story development but are beautifully crafted especially those with a gloriously written musical score that envelops and propels the movie rather than being feeble noise in the background, distracting from the movie, or worse, "oh no, I feel a song coming on." (And yes, I am skipping the musicals of the '40s and '50s for that reason, even though I have great fun watching them....and yes, I am a bit of a music snob having been 2nd flautist in more than one semi-professional orchestra).

1. Seabiscuit....oh my. What a beautiful cinematic creation that is.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean I....the first musical bar grabs you at the opening scene and breathtakingly sweeps you through the plot...the sound track alone is like driving through waves in a skiff.

3. Chariots of Fire. Feels a bit dated now, but was one of the first movies in my memory that really used music and filmography to artfully craft the story rather than just tell it.

4. Driving Miss Daisy. Such a touching and compelling story. The sound track is as strong as the Hudson Commodore that pulls you through each twist and turn.

5. Beverly Hills Cop I. Language is stronger than I'd prefer, but the opening scene and the musical score create such an incredible chaos and pace that never lets up until the end credits.

6. The Rookie. The gentle score and film development mesmerizes as the story weaves in and out with each breath of a dream becoming reality.

Anyone else have beautifully filmed and musically crafted choices?
