Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Not a good idea, DD, as my movie viewing tends to be an all-or-nothing endeavor with few trips to the theaters and long stretches between binges...which also seems to be my habit of BYC'ing. Wish I had more leisure time to accommodate!

"The Beach Bum" (currently at Redbox)

So we wanted something upbeat and silly, which seemed like a no-brainer with a cast of Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, Jimmy Buffet, Martin Lawrence, Snoop Dogg and Isla Fisher. What we got was a senseless debauched stoner film that made Cheech & Chong look like Oscar contenders. Believe it or not, in this movie Snoop Dogg was the most rational character! Supposedly the movie is based on a couple of Jimmy Buffet songs.

This film's story follows Matthew's hedonistic character -- Moondog -- over a period of major relationship milestones. My counselor husband noted that the dude is continuously happy despite setbacks because (1) he has no consequences for his actions and (2) doesn't care what other people think. So, yeah, if you enjoy people like that, you could expend 95 minutes watching this Faustian Forrest Gump puff and groin grind his way through Key West and Miami.

There's a reason this movie went straight to DVD. Well, in any event, I guess the cast got a nice Florida vacation out of the deal. The viewers will not feel so blessed. The saving grace -- for me, anyway -- is its soundtrack and the knowledge that, nope, I don't need to consider Key West for any upcoming vacations.

PG-17 rating for language, copious marijuana smoking, drugs, breasts, sex.
(The only thing missing was Seth Rogen.)

Hello film buffs of BYC :frow
On Friday night I went to an actual cinema :eek:and saw a film with two of my friends: Booksmart.
:pop
It's Olivia Wilde's directorial debut. It's a coming-of-age story set over the course of two days and a night, but the protagonists are teenaged women. The overall message is 'don't forget to smell the roses' which I think is always a good reminder. It was fast-paced, smart, witty, and highly contemporary and well-informed. Themes are friendship, loyalty, youthfulness, young love. The visual motif starts off quirky and becomes increasingly glitzy as the night wears on.
I'm giving it 4 out 5 stars. But if you're squeamish about young people having the time of their lives (eg sex, alcohol, progressive sexual politics, drugs, taking risks) it's not for you. You'll hate it. But me, I loved it and it brought on the most heart-warming nostalgia for my younger self.
:love

Edit: THUMBS UP!
:thumbsup

Thank you Mary Janet. As a young person I spent most of my time hiding in my room, was agoraphobic, also social phobias, depression, anxiety disorders, etc. etc. which however kept me from "keeping up with my peers," wasn't ever tempted to drink, smoke, do drugs, play around with sex etc. Maybe that's what made me depressed :gig
