I have a friend who is even more *NOT in the know* about goats than I am. I went over to trim her goats hooves for her and noticed her goat that was on the stand appeared to have worms in her poo. My friend says she has been religiously using an all-natural remedy every week in their food

I explained to her about worm tolerance build-up and suggested she needed to be a bit more aggressive in her worming regimine. Especially here in Texas. Then I noticed the goats flanks were very pale compared to the rest of their body so I then suggested a copper bolus of which she had never heard of.

So I wanted to ask everyone here dosage amounts of Cydectin for the girl whom she is NOT milking (is there a withdrawel time if you DO use Cydectin?), dosage amount for Ivermectin for the girl she IS milking, and how much copper bolus. Also, do the feed stores usually carry the copper?

Thanks to everyone for any info they can share in helping get these girls a little relief....

Hi,
I don't know why you might need to worm the girls differently but I'm not in TX. If it were me, I would just worm them both w/Ivomec and have fecals checked in 10 days or so. You can reworm as needed. The dosage I use on Ivomec is 1cc/50 lbs but I know people who use as much as 1cc/22 lbs. You might check with a vet or experienced breeders in your area.

The copper bolus goes by weight and none of the feed stores around here sell the copper so we have to buy it online and you can get the gel capsules at any health food or well stocked drug store. One pail of copper will last a small herd of goats for ages. It's sold in capsules for cattle. You just have to weigh your goat (or guesstimate as closely as possible) and then weigh out the copper rods into smaller capsules. The absolute best tutorial online for copper bolusing is at this website, IMO. :

Best of luck and your friend is lucky to have someone helping to dig up all this info for her.

I do a 4 day withdrawl on Ivermec...but I'd start with something gentler, like SafeGuard. It won't kill very many worms, so will cause less of a risk for massive load-dump and further anemia. I would do:

SafeGuard
wait 10 days
Ivermec (1 cc per 22 lbs orally)
wait 10 days
Valbazen (for tapes)
wait 10 days
Ivermec

If they are anemic (probably) based on the FAMANCHA scale, some Red Cell might be helpful during the course.

Also, BoSe.

Copper (Copasure) dose is 1 gram per 22 lbs orally. You can do this as often as every 6-8 mos or yearly, depending on the goat.

Is it safe to drink the milk after using Safeguard? Or the Valbazen? Can any of these be given during pregnancy?

The reason it may be different here is EVERYONE relies heavily on the Ivermec and Safeguard so much so that the worms have built up a tolerance to them.

I get the Copasure from Jefferslivestock.com and give it 1gram per 22 lbs of goat. I would do the worming also just like Kate said.
Start with the tapeworms first as they are easier to see as they show up in the poo when its expelled.
Some dont drink the milk but studies have show not that much makes it to the milk. I worm my babies at 10 days for tapes. We drink the milk and it hasnt hurt us at all.
They worm people in other countries with Ivermectin to get rid of their parasites. I dont also rely on wormer to worm the babies from the milk as like I said not that much makes it into the milk.
Sounds like they need to start slowly and work up to a good routine and yes Red Cell will help if the eyelids are pale as the bloodsucking worms are making them anemic.
Herbal wormers are a lot of hot air and you dont know what is in them or how much they are eating.
