It isn't saving them from the cruelty of humankind. They now will cut the horns off many in national parks in Africa to try to save them from poaching.

More like trim.

They can't cut it off completely, because it would interfere with the sinus system. So instead they cut it off about 3 inches from the base. It grows back eventually.
