Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Hello!
I think I have 1 drake and 3 hens. Will the drake be able to successfully mate will all these lovely ladies? They are young now, I expect them to breed next spring. Which brings me to my nest question, at what age do call ducks start to mate and then lay eggs?

Lastly, do males have the capability to make a quack noise when they are stressed, but general have a raspy voice? As my females when I hold them quack bloody murder! Have I got it?

Thanks!smile.png

females are always loud. I've never had a male who can quack. They rasp or peep and that's it. I have a had 100% fertility on my snowy call who have spent most of the summer running 1 male to 3 females.

also they are seasonal layers. Some.more seasonal than others. I have some who lay as long as the weather is above 50 and some who only lay till the end of july. Just depends on the lines. Mine always have and yours should too, start breeding and laying the following spring. Mine start laying around March or april.

Just to add to what @minihorse927 , you should get eggs at some point next winter/spring if you have females. Mating and laying aren't directly related because females lay eggs even if they don't have a mate. Mating doesn't cause laying; it fertilizes the egg. This applies to any bird I can think of right now, not Call ducks specifically or even just ducks generally.

My Calls start laying in late February. This year, they stopped for a couple of weeks in early May, started again, then stopped again in mid-June. Two of them started again a couple of weeks ago, and may have stopped again two days ago. I have no way to know if that's it for the year or if they're just upset because 15 of our juveniles moved into their adult pen on Sunday while they weren't looking. I know for sure they weren't happy about it at the time.

What @minihorse927 said about the sound of a duck vs drake is the same as my experience, but you might be having trouble with distinguishing if these are your first Calls. Even the ducks don't have the same familiar "quack" as most domestic ducks, but it's easy to tell it from the lower-pitched sound of the drake. I have drakes that can be pretty loud when they're upset, but they still don't sound the same as the ducks.

Best wishes!!!

Thanks! Yup, these are my first call ducks. I guess, I will see how it goes!

You and me both. :p I'm both anticipating and dreading the day Bean lays her first egg. She's a tightly-wound head case as it is, what's she gonna do when she has her first egg inside of her? She's probably gonna think she's dying, LOL!

Lol, that's funny! My girls are only starting to realize that I bring "yummy" things to eat!
