Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Sorry for replying so late. The safety hole was great, that was the right thing to do. If you don't see any more progress in the next twelve hours, I'd open the shell over the air cell entirely, moisten the membrane with coconut oil, and then just wait. When it's ready to hatch it should be able to push itself right through the membrane with no more help needed.

I chipped away a little of the safe hole over the air cell not near the bill (that way it can still "hatch" if it has the ability) because i wanted to see how the vessels were doing, and it brought me some relief to see it still needed a little more time, because this means it could still hatch on its own which is what i really want. However now (its been a few hours) it looks as though everything has been absorbed and it still hasnt even broken the shell! Very glad i made a safe hole. I hope it can hatch itself. That would be best.

Just be careful because I've had Calls try to hatch on their own but they couldn't break the shell, so as they turned to zip while not actually breaking the shell, they cut off their air supply and suffocated. So watch it closely if you don't want to open the air cell.

I've lost peachicks, Muscovies, and chicken chicks this way. :(

Thanks! I ended up opening it more to see how the veins were doing, then i got paranoid that the duckling might try to push itself out of the hole and get stuck in the middle of the night and die, so i made it bigger. I previously thought everything was absorbed but it was just everything where i made the opening. Still a few small vessels and I expect it'll be out in the morning, if not definitely sometime tomorrow. Will post pics! Im so excited, father was white and mama was grey

:popcan't wait! I'm helplessly addicted to duck drama. Especially hatching drama. :fl hope they all make it out!

Oh me too! it's such an addiction. That not everyone supports . My dad doesnt know but my mom does:D i just absolutely love ducks! They make me so happy! I could watch them all day weather permitting! My family doesnt really understand because they havent spent time with them, but theyre such adorable creatures with great personalities.

So it's about 5am here and I cant sleep. I think I may have jumped the gun a little on assisting, cause the one i did is still absorbing veins which tells me i didnt need to be as proactive as i was. And its funny because i see people all the time and im like "how can you not tell when to assist?" Its humbling. I just get so paranoid! I know all the what ifs! The slow death in a shell... in my defense it LOOKED like everything was absorbed, it was only when i kept going that i saw veins:idunno thankfully i know how to assist even if i havent nailed the when, so everything is ok for now.

Eta: both above mentioned components are crucial, obviously we cant go opening eggs on their due date! So not to imply that time isn't important. It is perhaps more important.
