Daily Digest for The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

FOR @Nomibear OR ANYONE ELSE WHO CAN ANSWER!
I saw Nomibear's broody attacked mama hen's chicks.....I have had this happen before as well with my BAs.....another broody came up to steal the chicks, so the mom actually pecked the chicks to kill them so the other birds couldn't get them.......I also had the entire shell pecked off of a non-piped chick.

do you think this was the interference of the other broody, making the mom hurt the babies? I DONT want this to happen again with my broody silkie marshie, who is hatching is approx. 5 days. im moving her to an isolation coop located in the actual run of my big coop.

It has been a great Hatch a Long!

I kept the Digest going longer than normal. The thread has slowed down enough now that we will be able to keep up with it.

Happy Hatching!

I don't know the hens motives, but I will tell you I had never heard of anyone leaving a broody in a communal coop before I joined BYC. I always move them to an empty pen - the coop hallway has been used if there isn't an empty pen.

That is so true!

I had to boot my goat out of his night pen last night to give it to my broody...LOL
Poor boy is now sleeping outside in a dog kennel with a tarp over it instead of in the bottom cage of my stack cages with 2 brooder pens of chicks above him. It's warm enough now that he can handle it though, & I couldn't leave the hen in the favorite nest with 3 turkey hens & 20 other hens stepping all over her to lay eggs. She hatched a batch in the same set up for me last fall, but was in the top cage instead of the bottom 1.

Hi had two go broody last night!

I will try to move them and set some eggs under them for hatching--I am running out of incubator space...I have too many eggs to hatch!
