Daily Duck Egg Report for 2016

I'm envious of your broody ducks. Mine have never once gone broody, but they are all under a year old, so maybe that's to come.

They never stop! God forbid I miss an egg or they lay outside..., they've tried to nest in snow! During the summer I have to be very careful or nests build up. They become community nests of 25+ eggs...

It isn't a contest at all I was just using that as saying your girls are really putting them out much more than most of us. Sorry didn't mean to make it sound like a contest.

Girl number 4 kicked in. I didn't even have to go to the camera to see who it was... It was a black egg! Pocahontas is now part of the working class. Good girl!

Our day is now 9:45 long.

8 eggs this morning and 1 more tonight!!! I made egg sauce that isn't on my diet... But it was sooooooo yummy!!!

Pocahontas is Cayuga? If she is, will you post a pic of the egg? I've never gotten a black egg from my gal. Just grayish.

Well its gray. Cayugas lay a white egg that in the start of the season has a very dark bloom on it. This lightens up so by the end of the season, they are white. Her first egg ever was really black. Here is today's haul (bottom) plus yesterday's egg (Excuse the poop, I just grabbed and took a pic). You can see that already from egg #1 to egg #2, that bloom is lightening up.

Envious! My Cayuga lady has never given me a dark egg. Her eggs are just a shade darker than the regular white eggs. On the other than, my chocolate runner has decided she's laying for sure now, so I'm getting a pretty green egg every day she only laid for a couple months last year but quit laying prematurely when she injured her leg. Then she decided to tease me and laid one single green egg in the fall, and then quit again. So I'm pretty happy she's finally laying again

Your little Chocolate sounds like a tease

. A year and a half ago Pocahontas started laying and she put out some pretty dark eggs that faded over about two months to white. Since she started laying in the fall she and most of the flock laid right through their first winter (they slowed down a bit missing some days here and there, but never stopped). This winter everyone took a vacation, so although this is her third "season" this is only the second time she has begun laying. So based on today's egg, I think she will be mostly laying white eggs.

My Chocolate seems to be adjusting her color center

Her first egg was white and the green level has varied quite a bit (The hue stays the same - just the saturation varies - today's was a bit light). Last year they were pretty consistent. Anyone with a clue about egg coloring can inject some knowledge here any time... When my Blue and Black Runners start laying, she will probably settle on a color.
