Daily Duck Egg Report

well I'm sorry I usually look to see where some one is posting from oh well hope you enjoy the nice hot days of summer. we're freezing. lol Some ducks just aren't cut out for motherhood. I have a few myself. Love to brood but when hatching started she tried to kill the ducklings, I managed to save one.

Oh thats terrible! Mine never got any to hatch, I bought the incubator hoping to rule out poor mothering - even though Varia seemed to do quite well - and mine in the incubator died at about 3 wks too, so Ive decided they cant cross breed with my drake, which is a shame. Thats why I bought my new call ducks, I know they can cross breed with him.

But the day I brought home the 5 calls and my new muscovy, I said whats the bet all 7 females now lay 10 eggs and each hatch at least 8...

LOL, thats how it happens though isnt it? Ive been wishing so hard for ducklings these last 6 years, and nothing. So it stands to reason one day I simply get overrun! In my little flock of calls Im sure theres at least one drake and perhaps even two, maybe my spoiled rotten little drake just needs a little competition!

Yep look forward to seeing all the lil ducklings when you get them.

What's the risk if I keep a male runner mix with Swedish with welsh harlequin who knows what he is except we know he's a boy that was suppose to be a sex link female! I have 3 other girls his age (2 months old) and 4 layers 6 months old. My husband wants him gone as the thought of eating a fertilized egg grosses him out! The boy is not mature yet so no signs that he will be an issue. We do plan on rehoming up to 2 of the 2 month olds as we really desire to have female runners rhis spring. So the ratio will be 1 male to 5 females at the least.

You can't tell the diff in fertilized eggs, the taste is the same. I couldn't get rid of the fertilized eggs from the ducks or chickens or we would be down to like 0 eggs.

lol

I think it's just the thought of it seems gross. Our poor ladies might just be harassed by one boy. And I see that runner makes need to have a higher female ratio as oppose to welsh. Problem is that he is def a mix of either runner, Swedish, welsh, khaki...his markings are truly unique!

I agree. My wife made a platter of deviled eggs out of duck eggs. The kids who just wouldn't try duck eggs swore that they were the best deviled eggs they had ever eaten.

I do agree...The thought grossed me out a bit too, but heres a tip - pick your eggs immediately in the morning and stick them in the fridge. There is absolutely no way to tell which is fertilized and which is not unless you are REALLY looking for it.

Made a mousse out of duck egg whites today...One was fertilized. I cant help but look. It comforts me that I know the pekins arent able to breed with my drake so even if he fertilizes their eggs, there cant be any babies out of it.

Just crack each one and say "Dont worry hon, this ones not fertilized" Like I said, unless you really look hard at the spot, you wont know the difference. And even sometimes if you are looking its hard to tell! I just decided I better get used to it, otherwise waste a ton of perfectly good food. Your girls go to all that trouble for you, the least we can do is find a way to use them.

So true, I collect mine every morning and pretty much use them right away with a couple high school football players, lol. Food wise nothing has a chance around here.

I'm usually rushing, crack, crack and go, don't have time to study it and try to figure out if it's fertilized or not. I make a bunch of deviled eggs with them if I end up with a couple extra dozen and whatever sport their in at the time, the players devour them.
