Daily Duck Egg Report

@lbrykowski2011

Miss Lydia is right. If you are going to allow your ducks to sit, then you want them inside a structure (barn, dog house, etc) of some sort.

Sitting Duck-Duh! Makes total sense, that's why I love this site, you guys catch the things I don't even think about.

Ok around easter i will quit collecting and give it a go. Thanks for the helpful advice to all.

Regina still sitting...Has not laid any more, just very protectively sitting on 2 eggs. A bit weird. She wouldnt let my drake near her but she did cuddle up to the call duck who might be male. The others arent laying as much because 'Queen Duck' has decided she needs the WHOLE nesting area so everyone else has to sit in the corners. I get 2, maybe 3 eggs in the corners. Quite a few soft shells being laid outside.

I cannot find my chicken eggs. I found Sheenas nest at christmas time and had to throw out 25 eggs - we are having a bad heatwave. Of course she has moved now.

That heat wave sounds awful, we're having the total opposite below 0 temps and then today before the next blast of frigid air hits we're going to be at 55* this is crazy.

Well Regina is broody and broody's do not like to share.

The temp my have something to do with soft shells, are you providing Oyster shell?
Don't know what to tell ya about the chickens nest they are good at hiding them that's for sure.

I dont give any calcium but its supposed to be in the feed. They get layer mix and layer pellets and generally the eggs are good. I have to work quite hard to crack them, and when I toss one out for the young crow, they bounce! I have no idea how old Regina is, so some soft shells may have been practise from her, havnt seen any in a week or so.

We got a little respite starting yesterday - a bit of cloud and some soft rain. Great news for fire affected areas and great for us as now we dont have to worry about fire. Its normal for it to be very hot, Australia is more desert than anything else, and even without the heat wave I'd have to chuck any eggs I wasnt sure about, they would begin to go off in a day.

Ive been watching on the news about the big freeze. Its hard to believe.

Im going to tear my hair out over these chickens! One of them laid in Reginas nest this morning - not sure how they managed that - by the colour it was certainly chicken, long and oval with a big ridge around the middle. Anyone seen them like that before? I get them like that if they havnt laid for a day or two and sometimes they are double yolk.

I keep my eggshells in a bowl and just break em up some, over the weekend I put them in the microwave for a few mins to cook any raw egg on them and Monday morning I have a lil self feed bowl that I fill for the chickens and ducks for calcium. They love it, the chickens will make their's last a couple days, but the ducks eat their's same day. I think eggshells are the ducks fav meal. lol

Glad that is working @lbrykowski2011 ... My only concern would be that you don't want to encourage egg eating. But if it works, do it. Actually last year I saw a YouTube video of a lady doing same, except she stored her cracked eggshells in a Ziplock in her freezer prior to microwaving. I think as long as you break up the shells really really well then the ducks seem much less likely to recognize them as eggs.

Here I've been greeting at least 9 eggs, collected every other day. Yes!

Ya, I keep a bowl in the fridge and whenever anyone does eggs, they know to put shells in the bowl. I do break them up and none of my chickens or ducks have ever ate their eggs. It's a nice cost savings too cuz i never have to buy the oyster shell. I'm getting usually 2 eggs a day still from my 2 campbell's, they have been very good to us all winter. Nothing from my muscovy yet, but I have caught the 2 muscovies starting to mate.
