Daily Duck Egg Report

My pekin female just laid her first eggs! Of course it happened to be the same night she and her partner in crime broke out of their pen and explored my backyard. It felt like an Easter egg hunt, but I think I got them all. Three is a pretty standard number for eggs, right?
Speaking of, does anyone know if every egg my female will lay will be fertilized? My other pekin is male. Would they taste or look any differently?

They usually only lay 1 egg in 24 hrs. and to me a fertilized egg tastes no different than one that isn't.
Congrats on your first eggs always very exciting..

Thanks!
You're right, I found another one this morning, but just one. I did find it in the same place as one egg from the first batch, which is good because my ducks broke out again and it's hard to search everywhere a duck can get.

They're getting good at breaking out...You'd think they'd get worse at escapes once they're full grown and not the other way around...

Thanks!

As long as they are safe once escaping, we have so many predators here mine don't stand much of a chance if they get out of the fence unless we're here and the dogs are out. We put up strong secure fencing to keep them safe. Does you duck have a place where she can get away from the others to lay her egg inside their house? if you can give them a little space inside their house they may lay there instead of looking for a place that isn't so secure. and lots of fluffy bedding to lay in.

Oh, they're fine in my backyard. The only predators roaming are my cat (who is smaller then the ducks and sticks to hunting mice and sparrows) and my dog, whom has the prey drive of a rabbit. She always gets bullied by the others and is prone to getting her treats stolen and her bed taken hostage. (by more than one animal

I keep the ducks in the side yard with a lot of space and let them out to explore every now and then. It's just easier to monitor them with a smaller assigned pen.
I never though of my female wanting a more private space though...She seems pretty happy with a wooden clubhouse-turned-duck-hutch to sleep in, but there isn't a lot else that has a good amount of space and coverage in her pen...
Thanks for the tip! I'll see what I can do for nesting material!

a little space to get into and lay an egg in the club house maybe, just a piece of scrap plywood laid up against the side of the wall with enough room to scoot under to lay an egg would work. If you do something like that be sure to attach it at the top to keep it from falling on her if she accidently bumped it. Sounds like you have a nice place for your ducks.

Thank you, I got a lot of tips for the pen from this site!
What are the odds that I still have some plywood sitting around?

I'll definitely get to work on that, thanks! Do you know if pekin ducks lay their eggs in a general area or should I put some more covered spots around the pen is she doesn't want to lay them all in the same spot?
