Daily Duck Egg Report

Can you get flake pine shavings? makes wonderful bedding and nesting material.

I can get it but its just too expensive. I have to have the stable going at the moment for the foal, I would much prefer to have shavings but they need to be replaced too often so Im sticking with the straw. If I didnt need the stable, I could splash out for a bale of shavings for the girls. Also I think shavings would make cleaning the shed a nightmare...My duck shed floods in heavy rain so Ive had to put in wood panels up on bricks. I then cover the wood in old chaff bags to stop the bedding falling thru and put straw over top. Ducks being ducks, they still get plenty of bedding on the floor...Then we have a flood and Im in for a really fun cleaning job!

What I will do for them is collect up all my lucerne scraps that are light and feathery and put them in with the straw. That way they will have something thats more flexible to make their nest out of.

Trust ducks to get picky now....When previously they would just drop them anywhere they felt like it, concrete floor, pond, middle of the yard....But sure, now I have to have a soft nest!

Yay I got three duck eggs this morning! My ancona duck just layed her first egg so tiny! :jumpy

Quite the spinach and eggs have been normal 2 days in a row now. Tried peas again and they wouldn't touch it, also tried oatmeal and still sat there. So I guess their pellets and corn will have to suffice w/occasional mealworms as a treat for now.

Balanced feed is always best IMO. I say more pellets than corn. I do give spinach, but not all the time.

We have been getting one egg a day for three weeks now :)

I guess only one out of the 5 girls is laying (or they are incredibly well coordinated lol). She only missed a beat once on Sunday (no eggs).

For some reason she decided to lay last night instead of this morning, and in a random place in the pen, so I missed it and only found it kind of frozen this morning. I will have to pay more attention when I lock them up at night :)
