“Why did you do it….Why would you sacrifice yourself for me?” The fire spirit asked breathlessly, his physical body in immense pain. His eyes held oceans of burning emotion.
The water spirit smiled at him, even as she lay atop the burning rocks that surrounded Mount Apollo, her body slowly turning to sky blue mist. “Oh Brandr, you’re so clueless.” She said softly, a trickle of blue blood running down her side. “I never really thought of you as just another spirit, you know. When I met you… I saw something incredible in you. A fire burning brighter then in any other spirit.” She begun, coughing every now and then. Her weak smile never fading. “I knew I had to protect you, possibly with my life. The elders know you will save us, but you must do it without me now.” She said, reaching her hand out and caressing the back of his head as he knelt beside her. Her other hand lay beside the sword wound, covered in faint blue blood. Brandr reached his right hand out and held her arm as she held him. Both spirits had tears falling down their faces, one of a bright yellow and the other a silvery blue. “I don’t want to do this without you.” He said, a sob racking his body. “ I don’t want to live without you. My world won’t mean anything…anything without you Talise..” he said slowly, softly resting his forehead to hers. Talise smiled one last time, a sorrowful, longing smile.
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
They both said in unison. Brandr and Talise both laughed once, before a look of peace came over her. Talise exhaled and closed her eyes as the rest of her slowly turned to mist, before spiraling gracefully into the star filled sky above. Brandr watched her go, letting a grief stricken and mournful cry fill the valleys around the accursed Mountain.
I DO NOT WANT TO ADMIT TO TOTALLY LOVING THIS STORY

holy cow. That was beautiful 🥺

I sat on a log by a crackling fire, sharpening my knife on a stone. Among the night sounds, there was another. One that wasn't supposed to be there. The sound of breathing. I could sense someone standing behind me though I pretended to know nothing.

Finally, the cold edge of a blade pressed against my throat. I put down my knife and stared straight out in front of me.

“Why can't you just accept the truth?” I said into the night.
The blade tightened

“Because,” the voice of a young woman hissed into my ear, “It’s not the truth!”

“You can say that all you want, but it wont change the facts”

“Liar!” She spat

I smiled as the knife pressed farther into my neck, releasing a small trickle of blood that dripped down, staining the collar of my cloak.

I sighed. It was time to take things into my own hands.
In one abrupt fluid motion I stood up and spread my wings, sending her tumbling back into the leaves on the forest floor. The woman gasped as I turned around and with one strong wingbeat, leaped over the log, planting a taloned claw on her chest, pinning her to the earth.

She struggled under the force, trying to escape.

I cocked my head.
Looking at her, I could see the fear in her eyes, I could smell it.

“What–what are you?” She grimaced.

“Now, the smart thing to do, would have been to know about the person you were going to follow out into the woods…HIS woods, only to put a knife to his throat and call him a liar.” I said matter of factly. “I find that extremely hurtful! What I am,” I continued, “I am what you are, but you wont believe me.” I flashed her a mock sad expression “I am a mutant, a half bred, an outcast, a freak!” With every title I swung my blade in the air and tightened my talons onto her chest. “Son to the bird people of the north and the humans to the south but accepted by neither and owing allegiance to no one.”

“You…are a…monster!” She gasped through gritted teeth.

“Already heard that one.” I laughed “Be more creative, besides, why don't you give, Uncle a try?”
