"I think you saved my life," Kaan held his gaze to the floor, hands tucked safely into his pockets. "No- no," he stepped back, shaking his head with every no. His wet eyes met mine. "You did. I know it!" He turned his face away from mine.
"I didn't," I whispered. He didn't need to hear it. Kaan, another victim falling into another trap wrapped in fantasy. It was my fault. I was feeding it to them. Worst than that, I wasn't stopping. Not stopping until-
Kaan rushed at me and swung his arms over mine, trapping me in an embrace that should only have been for someone who would love him back, but I didn't. I didn't care for him nor did I care about him.
His grip tightened like an Eastern Rat Snake and I glared at the cracked ceiling. Why wouldn't anyone save me from my life? He believed that he was saved, but I knew I wasn't. I couldn't. I was the guy who arrested dogs like this and stood aside while someone stole their last breaths and...
Tears threatened to surface. Kaan was too much. "Al-right," I said a little too harshly, pulling away.
A familiar light shone in Kaan's eyes as he stepped back, and a smile robbed his face of all the sorrows he had blurted out minutes before. I lifted my wrist to his view and gawked at my white gold watch. Anything to escape this mess and wallow in my misery alone.
"Sorry, but I must make this short," I said, lowering my arm. "I have a meeting at 2 and I'm already running behind."
"I can give you a lift," Kaan stood a little taller.
"No," I turned away. "It'd be too obvious..."
"It's ok, I'm fine with that."
I turned back and placed my hands on his shoulders, praying to the dust below that he didn't feel the sweat on my palms. "Look," I said, staring deep into his eyes. "You're young. And you're needed. I can't put you at risk when we'd both accomplish more apart. Here, go home to your family, you said you had one, and tell them what happened." I dropped my chin to my shoulder blade, a breath coming out my nostrils a little loud. I hooked my stare with him again. "What you received."
I patted him on the shoulder and smiled. How I wanted to tell him to tell them about me and maybe they'd be the ones to do the Task, but I knew better. No simple civilian was going to do the Task and stay innocent. It didn't matter who it was. There were laws protecting me and none of the Secret Police would understand.
"Goodbye Kaan," I stepped back and turned.
"Could we pray first?" he said behind my back.
My shoulders tightened. Why did these heretics always want to pray over everything? Didn't they know it would get them nowhere?
"I'm in a hurry, Kaan," I pretended to see him over my shoulder. "You pray, but I must go."
Kaan went silent. Hopefully, he was nodding his head. "Ok, C.B., I will. You go. Godspeed to you. I'll pray for you all the way home."
I gritted my teeth. Not now, C.B, not now. "Thank you, Kaan," I squeezed out. "I'll... I'll be praying for you too."

“This has never been a world that I understand. I’ve never felt it’s a place for me. But you came and for some reason you cared.” I turned to face him, “You taught me how to trust and how to understand,” I examined his face, the silent indicators of pain were glaringly obvious to me now. “You showed me that I just have a… different way of understanding.”

He smiled, “I think you would’ve figured it all out soon enough without me.”

“No.” I tilted my head thoughtfully, “I think you saved my life…” My eyes closed and I could still see his face clearly. “I wish I could save yours now.”
