d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

I would love to get them outside one day so their color really shows up in the pictures! The basement doesn't do them justice!

boy yall been busy today

Kristen, thanks I love talking about them and sharing info with folks about the breed. Also I'm glad you mentioned that about the blue quail. My blue buff columbians hatch EXACTLY that pattern. The head color of that chick and pattern is exact to my bb reds and the buff columbians, so to see it in a blue quail was thowing me for a curve there.

Dobieslady

Love the pics, and thanks for the e-mail too. Trust me, It takes for ever to get GOOD pics of birds, they just dont hold still long enough. That's why I dont put too many on. Whne I do get a itch to go take some for here and website , I usually end up spending 3-4 hours taking several hundred pics, just to get maybe 40-50 good ones and only a handful of excellent ones. So I know the feeling.

Speckled hen,

Cynthia, you know I love you...thanks for all you have said

Inkheart,

havent thought of it that way, but you pretty much nailed it. There are a few jerks in everything you do, so if you run into one of those with d'anvers, LOL dont let that change your mind about them too much. They are a great breed and have always been my favorite breed of chicken, the bantam phoenix is a close second though

It's just hard to beat a d'anver for me. They are showy, bold, sounky little things, and the pullets are as sweet as any chicken can be. They arent super huge layers, but for a bantam do hold thier own. They make awesome broodies and will defend their chicks til death. And when it comes to shows, they cant be beat. I've always said, If I were a judge, I'd get sick of looking at old english and silkies. Most of them do. Yet very few people have d'anvers, and being how they look (great) and the rarity of the breed over all in show rings, especially outside of quail colors, the judges really flock to them.

Hope you decide to try a few out one day.

The thought is "blossoming" in my head. The only experience i have had with a true bantam is my friends Japanese . To try my hand at incubating - i hatched some out for him. Let me tell you i raised them in my dining room - hands on at least twice a day and they never really tamed - very flighty so i got nervous about true bantams.
The Ohio nationals i went to last year there were rows of chickens - mixed breeds and yes you hit the 6 rows of silkies. Nothing wrong with that - but i get what you are saying . Thank you for the info!!!!!!!!!

haha, yep those showers love a silkie. I like them too, but it would get old being a judge looking at that all day long.

That's odd that Japs were never very tame. Mine that I had years ago were very docile. Most all the true bantams I have had were, japs, d'uccles, d'anvers .

hun??

That is odd. I do the same a lot here too, all my incubators are hand turned 3 times a day, except for the cabinet ones. I actually have a brooder in the spare bed room (my wife loves that, so proud of me, LOL) but I keep all my high end ones in there. Then there are 4 super large brooders outside, which get little attention other than feeding and cleaning. But they all end up docile. When you go in their pens, they'll walk all over your feet, some will even lite on you. Now the roos as we have discussed are ankle biters too.

But never any that freak out or act skittish, they are a very bold breed and show it well.

I wonder if the japs was just a line issue with yours or something. They are supposed to be a gentle docile breed too... Kinda odd

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to take a moment to say that this thread is DANGEROUS. Here I am, minding my own business, set on finding Faverolles or Ameraucanas for our backyard flock, when I discovered this topic... and now those birds are taking backseat to my brand new bearded bird obsession. Doesn't help that my husband is Belgian, and he's sold absolutely on the name alone. Doesn't hurt that they're heartachingly adorable, too.

As a birdless lurker, I have nothing else to say... other than hello, fantastic photos, and please keep posting!

haha

good to have you. With a Belgian Husband, well there's no question, you MUST have Belgian D'anvers at your house, thats a no brainer.

Glad you found the thread, look threw all the pages, virtually every color under the rainbow is listed on here.

Let us know if you have any questions,
