I am no expert yet but this is a quail pullet

It may be the quality of my birda but the lacing appears a little more subtle in the blue quails I think this is a pullet

And here is a male blue quail

That's right JJ.
See the center vein in the blue pullet. Now compare to the quail pullet, same pattern.
The last is definitely a male, see all the color coming in.

You are right too on the lacing not being as noticeable on blue quail pullets. Reason for this is how the blue gene effects reds and buffs.
The lacing on normal quail is this color, but when blue is added, it waters it down (dilutes it) and in quails case, makes the outer lacing kinda hard to see. It gets clearer with age, but still doesnt pop a lot of the time.

Just look for the center quill in the back feathers for that bright little line. And also the buff body color the males will get all over them helps too. If the dont have that and are mainly blue, it's usually a pullet

yep Lord willing I'll have plenty of them then again. May even have some of these nice project birds to let go, once I get beyond the color stage they are in. That way some others can breed for them too and get the colors going quicker.

Got stuff that looks black, but are genetically splits to stuff like lavender, mottled, silver quail etc. Would make great first step birds for folks. But I have to get beyond their current stage myself first.

Oh found some goldnecks the other day too. Got a trio ordered, so that will move me way up on them. Hope to have them in a few weeks, will post some pics when they get here.

Aubrey would a dark colored quail male with female lacing be good to start a good female quail line or would he be better to use with splash pullets to make blue quail or should he not be used at all?

Thanks for all the help.

never seen a male with lacing. If he's still young, give him a bit and see if he molts out of it, Thinking if it's a male it will.
If it's adult, post a pic of it so I can get a better idea of what you are looking at.

Would think it should be culled if that really is the case with it.
