I am keeping a couple of spare cockrels in it for right now. I have a couple of them I use for quarantine cages because they are portable.

Nanakat-- I just started out like this because I spent the summer building chicken houses for my wife. Chickens really need to be outside some. Thats why I am going to build 8 or 10 coops with an attached run this spring.

Here is the Pullet Palace for her hatchery layers.

Very pretty Aimee! Cynthia...great colors for a quilt inspiration....black and white with a touch of red accents with lots of orangey gold!

Oh, yeah, I agree! A Mille fleur quilt!

JJ, I may have to use your cages for inspiration. In Feb, the Orp coop will be vacated and I may want to build some cages for injured, broody, or whatever, birds in there, so thanks for posting those pictures for us. We always need separate spaces for situations like that-right now, my half blind EE/Sumatra hen is injured and in a dog kennel on top of Zane's cage (my crippled BR rooster), which is in the other half of the Orp coop. Under Zane is a cage we call the broody pen, but I like to be able to more easily get to the cage to feed and water, so yours built up higher like that would work really well.

I hear you about the special needs cages. I end up with some of them too. I have no problem culling a sick bird but an injured one is another matter, if they can eat and drink and act like a chicken. If I were doing it over I think I would just make the bottom cages storage because it is a pain tending to birds and cleaning cages on your hands and knees. Not to forget it can put you eye to eye with the occasional toerag, I moved one to the top for just that reason.

Ain't that the truth! One day I bent over to pet my elderly Buff Orp hen, Sunny, and got thunked good. Today, our resident toerag, Rusty, got tucked under DH's arm like a football and taken in the house for some "aversion therapy". I don't know exactly what he did to the little snot, but when he walked out of the house with him, he was saying something like, "See? I didn't let the big dog eat you."

Rusty's eyes were big as saucers and I got to scratch his beard without a single nip.

Yes, it's more work but its how you keep the color seperate and know which eggs came from where.

Yeah, I see what you mean, I have a couple breeder pens...but how happy are they in the tiny space? I just have 1 serama hen but she has a medium sized run with my sebrights to run around with.

Believe me I feel the same way. This is temporary, this spring I will be building a 6x4 coop with a 6x4 run for each color. Picture chicken townhouses. I have the drawings about done and I am working on the materials list.
