d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

But JJ, I don't have a meat grinder!!

I did go and look at Aubrey's pics though, and those pellets look like they are the same size as mine, so I guess I'll just watch and wait.
Thanks again!!

I think that chick in question is a pullet. Yes, I'm going the other direction on that one. The reason is that it doesn't have the black neck markings, and the eyeliner pullet is the same way. The definite males all have that, so it's four with black Columbian neck markings and red combs and two with no neck markings and combs that are small with little color at all. That group is almost 5 weeks old now.

Here is eyeliner kid.

Here is the one we were not sure of, but after thinking it was male, I now am going the other way on this one. It's very tiny, too-two pictures of the same chick to follow:

LauraLee...a coffee grinder will do it. I have one I bought for like $15 just to grind pellets and even the larger crumble for my bantam chicks whenever needed. :)

JJ Honey, I would feed them with a spoon if that's what it took, these are my little feathered babies!!

But these are just regular pellets, not the mini ones, can't get those around here, they are about the size of regular rabbit pellet food. It comes from Tractor Supply. Just don't know if they are eating it or not. If I decide not, I will throw it in the blender like I did when they were babies, it's just to hard to mash up for the babies, I couldn't even crush the chick started with my hands, put it in the blender and set it on "ice" to get it to chop it up.
And thanks all for the help.

LauraLee...how far from Lexington are you? If Lex is too far, call around your area and ask who carries "Hallway layer pellets". Hallway mills their own and they are mini pellets, that is what I feed my bantams, even my tiny OEGBs. In Lex, Farmer's Feed Mill mills for Hallway and they are on W. Louden...exit 115 off I-75

This link is their "find location" link...just select Kentucky and a list of suppliers that carry it will come up for you

Or if you want a little mille boy from Cyn's, when I get back with them you could come up and get him and I could pick up 100 lbs or so for you ahead of time and you could get it at the same time

I am just 2.5 hours north of you up I-75. LOL Little roo would be free of charge, just pay for the food. What a deal!

LL,
They eat pellets just fine. I have used both, they also eat whole corn in the winter just fine. I mainly use crumbles just because 50# of them go further.

Cynthia, all those pics sure are looking like buff columbians to me??

How could that be? Aren't they just not getting their spots yet? They're only just about to turn 5 weeks old now. Gosh, I'd have to go back and see when their parents started getting their white tips.

Here is Penny at 7 weeks old. She looks about like the tiniest one I think is a pullet in this group. Is there some subtle difference I'm missing?

Loving all the baby pictures.

Oh and JJ, you see that "bad bird" on my profile pic? That's Woody. I have to go 3 or more rounds with that little hot head every time I go in the lot. He's got this "I'm the head honcho of the lot" attitude. I keep knocking him backwards and he keeps coming back, till some of the other roos step in and run him off. Today as I was unlocking the gate and here he came to meet me hopping sideways, it was funny to watch him, thinking he was such a bad thing and him so tiny.

Hopping sideways...could be the courting dance...

My little black roo LilGuy has been handled a lot since he was in the show pens. He was soooo cocky hen I first got him. If you reached inthe pen to pick him up from underneath, he would flog. But if you reached in with your hand on top of him, he would squat for you to pick him up.
After several rounds in the floor pen, LilGuy has finally understood I'm not a chicken.

Check out the local thrift store...I found a really nice meat grinder for $5 to grind the OEGB and baby banty food.

I checked the locations and the nearest one is like 88 miles away.So I guess I'll just grind these babies and buy crumbles next time. But thanks so much for the offer, where are you at in NW KY?

Thanks for all the input, I'll keep an eye out for the grinders.
Nana, it may be a courting dance, but then he wants to flog next. Maybe he's trying to say "be my hen or I'll flog you".

Anyway it's been a daily battle, till the other roos take over for my and run him around the house. He even tried to get me through the fence today. I just laugh at him, he's just too cute.

LauraLee I am in BFE (I must give you a general location because JJ watches everything and I cannot have him infiltrate my boundaries with those shaven creatures before the Hairy Legged Horde is fully trained)....I am north of Lexington and Georgetown. About 2.5 hours north of you straight up I-75 :)
