d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

I have a couple questions about d'anvers. Do they fly much? My little guy will fly up to his roost at night, but during the day when he and his girls are free ranging he won't. He is pretty funny to watch run as fast as his little legs will carry him across 2 yards when I call the flock to me. The rest will fly(4 BO girls), just not him. The other is, will he be able to cover the BO girls? I've never even seen him try, he's about 5 1/2 months right now (or is he still a little young). I don't care if he does, I was just curious.

They can fly like crazy, but prefer to run around. The only time the will fly on their own is to go to roost or if threatened by something, aside from that, yep they do the Fred Flintstone leg thing, just looks like a little blue blur they move so fast.

not sure what a BO girl is, there's too many abbreviations for stuff now a days to keep up with them all . But yes he will breed anything he can grab on to, size doesnt much matter.

He's still a baby, give him another month or so and he'll be ready to start. They mature right around that 6 month area so he's getting close.
Mine have never been aggressive breeders like some large fowl roosters though, but he'll get the job done when the time calls.

Think that got them all, if you have any more, just ask

Thanks for the fast answers! I figured he was just about there, his girls just started laying within the last few weeks. Maybe once he gets a little older he will start putting one of the other younger cockerels (younger than him) in his place.

Thanks, I realize time will make it less painful, but right now, it's pretty awful. She was such a beautiful dog, a gentle soul, as submissive as Cody, who was a boxer-retriever cross, was dominant and in-your-face. That's why they got along so well. He never tolerated another dog so Kes was the perfect match for him.

Well, my little feathered pitbull Aubrey is just fine. He was sleeping late, LOL.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together... I hope this helps, been there way too many times. Cats, my beloved 15 year old collie and yes the chickens. It doesn't matter, they all have a special place in our hearts. Take care. Cindy

Thank you, Cindy. It's a comforting thought. This one will take awhile to get over. I just lost a very special older rooster less than a month ago so it was on the heels of losing my big blue buddy in my avatar that we lost Kes. I'm sorry for your losses as well. They add so much to our lives, especially when people seem to let us down.

I've been comforted by my sweet little D'Anver hens, though. Penny, Aimee, Carly, Mina and Lucy love to be held, especially those first two lovebugs. They will sit with me for hours if I let them and just snuggle up and talk in their tiny, little girl voices or snooze quietly. Aubrey will leave me alone if I pull a chair into the pen and gather up a lapful of his girls. He doesn't quite know what to make of that, I think.

kinda thought that might be what BO was, but wasnt sure

I was wondering if any one had an extra mille fleur d'anver rooster they want to sell and would be willing to ship to TN. I lost mines over the weekend due to old age. Like a dummy I didn't keep a back up. If anyone has and extra for sell and would be willing to ship to TN. I would greatly apprecate it.

Thanks-

Came home today from work and saw the new puppy running loose in the backyard. Lost 2 silver quail (1roo & 1 pullet) and a blue silver quail pullet, all 3 were from eggs that I got from Kristen. I was so mad but just looking at his face, I just couldn't gt mad at him. Thought that I lost the F1 columbian pullet too but found her in the neighbor yard, 3 house down the street.

Aubrey! What will I get if I put the f1 columbian roo or silver quail roo together with the blue silver quail pullet? This will be my project for the spring. Hope to get eggs from you soon too.:)

Hate to hear that Do.

man I'm trying too on the eggs, those you wanted just have done squat. I am getting a few more pens laying now, so maybe they'll kick in sooner or later.

on the birds you mentioned

silver quail to blue silver quail will be 1/2 each

on the columbian roo to a silver quail. That's pretty much what I did this year, just flip flopped on the sexes as I just have hens. But it will be largely quail, guessing 3/4 as the columbian is half quail at this point. but you should get about 25% columbian to come out I would think. That's about what I got from them this year. Just ended up with all girls

The pairs I've selected are posted below:
All three are laying eggs and the little roos are covering the hens.

The Buff Columbian pair

The Mille Fleur pair

While not marked Mille Fleur, this is the hen

There are two other roos to choose from:

The Porcelain roo Peter and

and the hen Paula. She was not happy that I took her picture...interrupting her concentration

Lost Mary, the other hen, day before yesterday. She laid an egg in the morning and had died by early afternoon.

These two males don't have girls unless I give them some Old English pullets.
Spike has a really prickly comb

and Abe

Guess I'll have to order some more eggs to try to get more girls.....
