Grats on all the eggs hatching too for those going through that! I recently in the last few months hatched some chicks of a different breed and ALL but 1..... is a roo....

Have a 3rd pip now. These are taking their time and making their sibling in the brooder wait. The first one has clean legs, no feather stubs that I can see.

Bad babies being very slow! Ack! Keeping my hands busy while waiting. The lone baby is sleeping between stuffed duckie and monkey in the brooder, fluffing out.

Congrats on the hatchlings Karen....Cynthia is an excellent chicken mom so they will be bouncing friendly babies....just don't wait too long to go get them because she also spoils them. They will want to be talked to, held and given scrambled eggs for breakfast in a week....two weeks and they will demand to be allowed to watch TV and sit on you while doing it. Oh wait....that's my house too. Hahaha. Congrats Karen.

I must say that this weather and I are at odds. The past week has been the week from Hell. I lost my beautiful blue ORP hen, Athena to pendulous crop. The weather stole my young duck hen and the next day her mama and both drakes grieved themselves to death the next two consecutive days. In between these losses My bantam coop was raised by a coon who tore the pop door nearly off. I lost a young blue ORP pullet, two silkies and my beautiful d'anver pullet. Thank gosh I am nite owl and heard my young cockerel raise the alarm and get the big roos and Rufus alarming from their coops. So my daughter and I scared the critter away running out like psycho women at 2 am. So 6 coch'amver pullets, a mf d'anver pullet, a silkie hen, a blue orp pullet, a blue orp cross pullet and my little delaware BR cross coxkerel survived.

Sweet and sad result....next night coon came back and barely escaped alive. It did however not escape unharmed. Little sucker darted downhill as I squeezed the trigger. Hubby and I saw a poof of fur but no coon. So hopefully he is spreading the word in the wood that a crazy woman lives here with a rifle so it would be best to eat the neighbor's chickens. Hubby laughed saying we will known if he comes back because he will have a bald strip across his back. For the record....my aim is excellent, he got lucky and the rifle is not a wussy ( a M1-Carbine) so coon will die if I catch it back here. Grrrrrrt

All three of the pipped eggs have progressed a tad further. I'm holding my breath for more pips. There really ought to be a big bunch start pipping from what I saw when candling and this nifty little Genesis bator I have-it has a built in hygrometer, but I also calibrated a well-rated analog to back it up and kept the readings on both between 30-48% the entire way. Now, they are reading 58% on the Genesis and 68% on the analog, so that ought to be great as well. There were no outages, no glitches at all, so it will be a complete mystery to me if most do not hatch out of these 14. The first chick hatched clean with no open navel.


LH, I am SO darn glad that the coon didn't get Wynette and Isaac's son. He is a real gem, that one. Poor thing was scared half out of his mind, but he raised the roof with his alarm cries just like a good rooster should.

ETA: A 4th egg has pipped. So, one chick plus 4 pips so far. One or two of those should begin zipping any time now.
