d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Aubrey, what do you think about the color of this chickie? It's lighter than all the rest with a couple of random black spots here and there. What's that going to look like? Still a bbr?

The repeat broodies. Sissy is in there with Carly and Penny since she won't break up after letting her chick die. Maura is in the milk crate nest but at least, they can all stay there until they are moved and no one is on an upper nest where a baby is in danger when it hatches.

From left to right, Sissy, Penny and Carly.

NEWBIE ALERT!

Hi, I am new to d'Anver and new to posting so bear with me please!

I am putting together a coop for d'Anver chicks. What size would you folks suggest I set up as a roost bar? Round?

Any input towards a good starting setup would be greatly appreciated. I only have 9 chicks that I hope to put in this coop for now. BUT I'm sure I'll want more!

These chicks are just quail. I LOVE all of the other colors and patterns I've seen. I have read that with the quail, they are easy to sex earlier than other varieties. If the back stays black, it's a boy and if it's lace, it's a girl... Is that correct? My chicks are only about 3 weeks so to early to tell. I could guess by attitudes?!

I am guessing I have as many as 3 to 4 boys. Is there any chance that if they are raised together they could get along?

Thanks for any/all input. It's difficult to start without a mentor. I am in love with the sweet nature of the breed.

I am sure you will like the d'Anvers. I use 2 1/2X 1 1/2 for roosts just because I can get them at Lowe's and they are easy to put up. I just use them as they come with maybe a little sanding on the rough places. On sexing quail you are right the females get a laced back. The males will be that golden bay with no lacing but you can normally pick them out by the red on their shoulders first. You can normally keep a few males together with out too much problem but their will be some sparing matches from time to time.

My little d'Anver hen hatched eggs this week and I gave her a few more from that were incubator hatched. She has taken all 13 well in stride. They all make it under her wings...for now. Some were almost one week old so already knew about food and water. A mixture of Bantams...Delaware, Rosecomb, OEGB and d'Anver.

Awwwww! I had a Buff Orp hen who hatched two chicks, then wanted the 25 three week old chicks in the brooder pen next to her. I let her have them and she finished raising all 27 of them.

I started with 4 males and 3 females. The males did get along quite well, with just a few tussles over status.

Alex,
Im betting it will be red pyle. The white version of bb red. I didn't think I had the pyles near the bb hens while getting yours, but must have.
If you start seeing an orange color coming in on it mixed with white, that's what it'll be....

Thanks for your vote of confidence! I'm walking a thin line on roosters. I have 14 adult bantams... 3 are roosters. Many of the hens are broody. Among others, hens are.. 2 Araucana, 4 Cochins, 1 d'Anver (mix?)... Can't imagine why they're broody... Ha, ha, ha! At the end if the day we are getting a whopping 3-4 eggs a day!

I have only had chickens for 3 years and no mentor. My selections were totally to settle a on a breed. d'Anver will be my breed going forward.
