d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

My buff Columbian chick started crowing yesterday! He sounds like a squeaky toy

Chickie, isn't it hilarious?

So darned cute!

Aubrey, has anyone you've placed eggs or chicks with ever ended up with a roo that bonded to them? I've got 5 baby cockerels, and 1 pullet. One cockerel constantly seeks me out, and finds my hand or lap and snuggles in and stays there. Yes, the pullet I've got is sweet too, but this guy is so attached to me, that doing chores means I have a little satelite always nearby, taking breaks from foraging to insist on being held and carried around. If an too busy working in the garden to stop, he'll fly up to settle down on my hat or shoulder.

I'm enjoying this now, because I imagine that when he's fully mature, he'll be much more reserved? I've read people saying the males can be grouches. Do any ever stay friendly with their person?

It IS so funny and cute!! In the next pen over I have an oversized, HUGE golden Cuckoo Marans rooster chick that has just started crowing and it is the most horrible, loud honking crow. It is hilarious to hear the little squeaky crow next to the loud nerve grating, big boy's crow!!

I have heard other people warn not to get too friendly with roosters because they loose their respect and will turn on you. I think it depends on the individual bird. I have had some that were born super friendly and stayed sweet and non aggressive and those that didn't get handled that much that started attacking me. I don't know about the d'Anver roosters since I only have the one adult and he is super sweet and has never come after me

Thanks for explaining the barring Aubrey

So, for my other questions . . what colors will I get if I breed the Dun Cuckoo Quail pullet to my Khaki Quail rooster? And should I not use my buff Columbian rooster for breeding since he has three leaders on his comb?

dun to khaki makes 50% of both, so you'll have 50% dun quail and 50% khaki quail, being the hen is barred the male chicks should be barred

x's 2

bunch start out nice, some stay that way some dont, ask Cynthia haha

I have a lot of them that arent bad.. they dont follow me around any more, but they dont mind me either, then there's some that try to get me threw the fence when I pass by too, just an individual attitude, d'anvers are full of it

So one of my silver quail, that I swore was a pullet, now has a red comb at 5 weeks old. The guy who sold me the hatching eggs had mixed colors, so maybe the genetics get a little jumbled? There is very little white and the back feathers are laced.

I got this little guy at an auction... this past weekend.

And this cute hen, too. I love her color and intend on breeding her to my porcelain roo.

She's a little scared but still a sassy little thing.

Guess I'll have to wait until maturity to see how the cockerel I keep turns out. For another month, we're keeping all six here. Then, I'll have two out of the hatch for myself, and the other 4 will then be old enough to go to their new homes. But anyway, the one I think I'm keeping is incredibly SWEET!

I adore these d'Anvers!

Sounds like you have a good plan. Hope the guy you keep stays as sweet as he is now.
