d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Rusty and the girls moved into their cabin and all seem happy. He was up looking out the window looking out crowing to announce his arrival. Hooligans are doing good and out growing the brooder.

Wow, I love that cross because it's the Forrest Gump Special. You know, life is like a box of chocolates, only here it's this cross. You never know what you're gonna get.

Mina switched nests with Penny and one of Penny's former eggs hatched under Mina. It's blue with a head spot out of one of my Blue Plymouth Rock hens, sired by one of several Delaware cross males, but most likely the one in my avatar, considering what was going on in my flock at the time I was collecting these eggs. I got mostly eggs from the two Blue Rock hens and the one Splash Rock hen so that I'd likely get some blue barred chicks and the first one looks like that's what I have. Probably a cockerel, though the head spot could be on either sex in this case, the male being barred and not the mother. The other four are pipped and may be hatched by morning.

So, Karen, any luck taming the wild beast Rusty2? It's positively quiet here with 5 of the remaining 10 hens broody and only Spike and Aubrey left. Aubrey decided he was going to give me a complimentary flog today. He rarely does it anymore. Spike won't challenge him but runs around making that "oooooh" sound that Olive Oyl in Popeye used to make when she'd wring her hands, LOL. He hates when Aubrey makes a run at me, but he won't buck his daddy.

He hasn't flown at my head, but did have a go at my hands a time or two when I was feeding and giving water. When he would do that I just sat it down out side the kennel they were in. They got to look at it until I finished all my other farm chores and got back to them. Evedintly he got the idea that if he came at me they would be hunger. ...for a few mins any ways. Or the girls got mad at him for it. I had them in my labs XL kennel in my garage. They are now in my kids Little Tykes Cabin I converted into a coop and out in the middle if the barn yard. Now the real test will be his behavior when I let them out to free range. I will start in about a week or little longer turning them out about a hour before dark. If he flys at my head then we may have a issue. He has bit me and hung on like crazy. I have this really tough blue skin. I wear my gloves and he just bit on and looked up at me like "Why aren't flenching?"... lol setting the food down so they had to look at it seemed to work well. It takes me all of about 20 mins to feed and water everyone so they weren't looking at it long, but long enough for the girls to get mad at him.

LOL, tough blue skin. Well, Rusty isn't the brightest bulb in the package. He may take quite a few lessons and even then, I'm not sure how much progress you'll make. If you make him avoid you, you've done well. What a dufus he is. At least he's handsome.

Okay, genetics question I think I know the answer to but here goes:

Splash Rock hen. Possible sires are all Delaware crosses, but two are barred males and two are Dellie-colored, the white with Columbian pattern hackles and tail.

She has two chicks hatched in the bantam coop. One is black, though that egg had her name with a question mark on it, so could be it belongs to one of the BR hens and not the Splash. I wasn't entirely 100% sure on that egg.

The other chick, the one in question, is yellow like a Delaware. The sire HAS to be one of the Dellie colored crossbreed males, right? My old Delaware rooster was not in the picture when I gathered the eggs for this hatch, having had frostbitten feet from bad circulation. Poor Isaac just got back with some of his hens after living separate for over a month and he wasn't breeding much prior to that.

Here are the two males who could have sired it. Now, I haven't seen its comb. If it's a pea comb, I know who the sire is, the Del x EE male.

ETA: Checked and baby seems to have a single comb. Also, reviewed when Isaac left the flock and he was with them four weeks ago, so he could be the sire of the chick after all. I hope so. Be the first one with the splash Rock I think.

And there is the male in my avatar and Deacon, the one who flies out all the time, son of my Sumatra lineage Amerau/EE/whatever hen, Tiny, who you probably remember. Both those are barred so I can't see them being the sire of a yellow chick.

Penny is below the nests now with her two babies, one coal black and one black with head spot. Mina is still in the nest and her last egg is hatching now. They are all LF chicks.

Mina's blue and yellow chicks are out of a Blue Rock and the Splash Rock. The blue is out of the blue Rock and the yellow is out of the Splash Rock so I guess that one is sired by either Isaac, or one of his Dellie colored crossbreed sons. Her last one just hatched and it's out of my black hen, Raven.

Went back and looked at the marked eggs. These two with Penny are marked Blue Rock and Splash Rock, so maybe a pair from the coloring.
