d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Aw, you need a D'Anver rooster. After all, he won't be a real rooster, he just thinks he is, LOL. He's really not much more than a squeaky toy. One of my first friends to see them in person was squatting down in the coop and one crowed behind him and he said, "Why don't you crow like a real rooster?" They do have piercing high pitched crows, but they don't have much carrying power unless you have about a thousand like Aubrey does!

Hey, about 4 seconds into this video of another rooster I rehomed, you hear a very clear D'anver rooster crow in the background. Just so you can hear one, here is the video, just for that sound.

I wish I could keep a "he" but I can't for domestic tranquility. Hubby is fine with the chickens he REALLY doesn't want a rooster. He did put up with my parrot for 5 years so I can understand that he does not want more noise. Also one of my neighbors requested that we not have a rooster. I can legally have one but the neighbor is a great neighbor and I don't want to hurt the relationship.

That bolded part to me is the very definition of not a great neighbor, one trying to manipulate you into doing what he/she wants.

I guess you do what you must. I'd really be irritated if a neighbor intruded on my legal rights by asking me not to do something. After all, it's not like they don't make noise. You will know that this issue always bugs the heck out of me, really "frosts my onions", as a friend of mine on BYC used to say. I'd rather have my roosters than any relationship with any neighbor, but of course, I live in a place where there are roosters crowing all around us, not just mine. If one of these neighbors (who are each over 200 ft away) asked me to get rid of my roosters, they'd have to pick me up off the ground from where I was rolling laughing, I'm afraid. Sounds rude, I know, but one has family of hers living in two storage sheds, keeps her bright lawn lights on all night to light up my front woods, and the other has farm equipment that, when he mows his vast front lawn, the sound travels up to me so that we have to shout at each other to hear if we're outside and the noise from the Gator or the ATV's running all over on every holiday, well, you get the picture.

I didn't intend to have a rooster, originally, because I didn't want anyone to know I had chickens up here. BUT, you know why I finally got one? The hens make as much noise with their caterwauling as any rooster does so I figured everyone within 1/4 mile knew I had chickens anyway so what's one more voice, right? Those girls are so darn loud with their "uh, uh, uh" sometimes, they sound like a bunch of seals on a rock, I swear. Noise levels would go down a lot if I had only roosters, LOL. Crazy wenches with their caterwauling, sheesh.

I agree wholeheartedly about noisy hens. 1 starts egg song here and everyone joins in, very hard to ignore. My neighbors told me a couple of years ago they enjoy my roosters crowing, they are LF mostly. They claim a victory by rolling over and snoozing while the roos are up and at it.

My neighbor didn't give me an ultimatum - he just said he hoped I wasn't getting a rooster. I'm choosing to not get one because I don't think I should ruin his piece and quite. He is a great neighbor, he has cut down trees for us and he plows our extreamly long drive for free. He goes out of his way to help. We were just having a conversation one day and I got the hint that he would prefer not to hear crowing. I have 3 acres but a small backyard (which is where I have to legally have the coop) so he will hear some chicken noise.

If this little one turns out to be a roo I'll keep him to see how loud he really is. If he is quieter than my the annoying dog across the pond he may be a keeper. Who know, he may not be that bad!

Hahaha, yeah, those little dogs can be much worse than a rooster, can't they? They bark incessantly and a rooster rarely crows non-stop like a dog can bark. Of course, no one has to keep a rooster, but to me, a neighbor who tells you what you can't do on your property, or even really suggests strongly, is akin to a terrorist who is fine keeping the peace as long as you do what he wants you to do. Noise is noise, so I'm not sure why roosters are in a special category. I hate mower noise and weedwhacker noise and roaring ATVs and dirtbikes, but for some reason, people seem to think they get a free pass and roosters are horrible.

A friend of mine in CA has two acres. She is the reason I have my gorgeous show type BBS Ameraucanas since she sent me two different batches of eggs many years ago. Her n'hood rules say she can keep enough chickens for her family's personal use and keep roosters for breeding, but the neighbor, who had accepted free eggs on numerous occasions, complained several times about her ONE rooster crowing. He was my Gypsy's grandsire. She got rid of him. That really ticked me off, first that the code folks wouldn't just have told the guy that she was within her rights to have him, that EVERY rooster will crow and that he had to just suck it up. That's pretty much what I would have told him myself. But me, I don't care if I ever even have a neighbor. In all my experience, they usually end up being trouble, even if they start out friendly. So, I would have recorded my rooster's crowing and played it ad nauseum and invited the code people to find the offending rooster when the gripey neighbor called. Eventually, they'd have decided he was nuts and quit coming. But, that's my cantankerous side, LOL.

I have the other ectresm here. I have chickens, ducks, goats, rabbits, a Turkey and a goose. A duck makes 5 tines as much noise as a rooster. My goats keep getting out so I was going to sell them. My neighbor pouted and didn't want me to get did of them because he sat out on his porch and watched them. Sadly he passed away so now I'm geting rid of the goats as soon as it warms up enough they can be hauled. I'm ready to get my flowers back.

I have one person near who insists on leaf blowing in the summer at 6am - maybe I should play some rooster sounds for him

He does it every day, I have no idea how he has that many leaves to blow!

Hey, thinking about it here is a picture of my Roo, I would like another show quality roo for breeding, my current one has a crooked chest.
