Aubrey, from spending time with the D'Anvers in the coop, I think both the porcelains are pullets and at least two, maybe three, of the Mille Fleurs are also pullets. I realize it's a tad early, but I know for sure two Milles are males--there's no mistaking those raised pink combs on them. It would be fabulous if I had only two cockerels and five pullets, wouldn't it?

Honestly, they are about equal. The lavenders are Linda Blackman's line, the cuckoos Tom Shephard's, both win every time they come to a show with their colors.

Does anyone know whether d'Anvers as a breed (or strains of the breed) have any genetic tendency toward thiamine deficiency - inability to absorb adequate thiamine? I had a pair of older birds (probably 7-8 years old) that started showing low energy, loss of appetite, weakness probably over a period of months. When I saw it, I increased the use of vitamin supplement in the drinking water (Durvet poultry pak -- intensive vitamin-electrolyte mix with high thiamine) and made sure they were drinking and eating. The cock recovered and is still doing well, but the hen continued to decline, exhibited textbook thiamine deficiency symptoms and died.

None of my other bantams or standards have ever had this happen -- I have a number of breeds sharing the barn and run and they all eat the same feed and drink the same water. Only the Belgian d'Anvers developed this problem.

Thoughts?

Of the thousand I have had, no never once had issues with that, may have just been a weak line, were they hatchery stock or private breeder?
I hear all sorts of weird stuff going on with hatchery lines, kinda makes me wonder just what they are doing to them... All good breeder stock is usually tuff as nails when it comes to d'anvers. For me they have always been one of the most relilent breeds on the farm.

I too am looking forward to the creles, already have a few F1 's from last year, they are on the website, should have just been barred looking, but are pretty much crele already. Using those males over my bb red hens this year and hatching off some very nice chicks from them, just had 20 pop out this morning actually. These should be the real deal. Will add pics this fall once they are colored out for yall.


oh, also just put on a d'anver chick listing in the Day Old Chicks For Sell forum if anyone is interested.
They'll be cheap compared to normal price as they were a BYC're back out order. Porcelains, Silver Quail, Lavender Cuckoo, and Black Mottled in colors, will be 40- 50 chicks.
