d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Be carefull, stay hydrated and wear a helmet. I have more of them.

Thanks, Here is a oddity for you ( I know you like them) hatched from some light sussex eggs, seems one of the hens had a thing for a silver laced polish.

That chick of yours looks like a black and white pic of a millie. I bet silver millie.

Cyn- them broody hens sure don't take no ....stuff from anything or one.

jj
That's one freaky looking sussex there, JJ. Sure 'nuff looks like a Polish snuck over the fence.

I do love that porcelain girl, but I also love the blue quail and blue silver quail.

Would be cool to get an unexpected Silver Mille, LH! No idea how it happened, but still...'

Oh, yeah, Carly is especially snippy with all of the inhabitants of the bantam coop; both she and Aimee laid down the law yesterday and today and were issuing periodic reminders not to mess with their kids. The little ones aren't having much trouble at all in there.

I'm....almost...out...of....the county *pant, pant*.

LOL!

JJ...that oddity wants to come to Kentucky to live at the Menagerie'...Lord knows it will fit right in! Cute bugger though.

Cyn....whoa that was a serious broody charge going on there. Poor little purple menace did not know what hit her did she? hahahaha

Spiderpolice that single comb is an oops for sure but they could pop up if enough culling has not occured or just randomly by chance. :(

Well so you all (aside from Speckledhen who knows what my ugly mug looks like...both my natural color and this new dark blonde job)know what the LadyHawk looks like...Here is my Daughter, Cheyenne, BYCer and dear friend, Braclin and Moi' We were celebrating Cheyenne's 16th Birthday tonight.

The gals at the restaurant had the cook fix up a cute birthday dessert for her after they found out she loved chickens.....It was a french vanilla custard egg and inside they had creme brulee' custard. LOL

That, good sir, is awesome! I am referring to Cetawin's picture of the egg custard, of course. I am curious about your oddity chick - the white one with the dark markings. I would guess some type of Columbian genes at work? Possibly a Silver gene? You have any mostly white birds in your flock with feathered legs?

Spiderpolice77 - those single combs can be a bit tricky to breed out because of their recessive nature and because of their tendency, when carried recessively, to enhance a rose-combed rooster's...err, potency, shall we say. This gives him the ability to spread his single combed genes about the flock more than any of the competing males. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing to have one pop up every so often. They are completely recessive and caused by only a single gene. If you are adamant enough you can be rid of them entirely of if you progeny test. Frankly, I would rather deal with a line that has single combs popping up every so often than a line that has a predilection for what I consider to be much more serious offenses: wry tails, or crooked beaks (both things that can be very difficult to get rid of by simple culling). :\

Red 4X4 you have some beautiful birds! Need I say more? I love the fact that your Millies do not have an excessive amount of spotting on them (they look young) and the spots they do have seem to be mostly solidly bordered by black. Well done. Your Buff Columbians appear to be at the same point of development as my own. Still a bit of mossiness on the backs of the hens. Pretty nonetheless.

Speckledhen, I LOVE the attitude and protectiveness of your little d'Anver mothers :) So cute. Wish my d'Anver moms were that good. Mine seem to be a bit ditzy. I swear if mine could have an internal dialog it would be something similar to the following: "Come on children, lets run around in the wet grass!!! I KNOW you'll love it - we will range far and wide because there is sooo much to see on your first day of life! Then, I will teach you to fly with your non-existent wing feathers and then I will excitedly run over to the human house for treats and call to you while you peep plaintively back at the barnyard because you are too small to keep up! YAY! I love being a mom!" Seriously girls? Seriously...

Needless to say IF I let one of my girls become a mom, they are kept in strict confinement for at least the first week or two and then it seems like things are ok after that. I do have some that are good moms though.

Hope everybody's chickies are showing promise!

Well, I tried to get some pics of the chick group. For once, I'm pullet heavy, I think. I may see one cockerel, but I'm not really even sure about that one. Of course, could be the joke's on me and two will show themselves soon, but here are a few pics of them eating today, though not great ones. I know that little heating pad chick "Heather" is a pullet. That one and two others I'm very sure of. Holler if any males jump out at you. I did check my pics of Rufus's group and by 6-7 weeks old, they were so obvious what they were. These are 5 1/2 weeks old now.

Hi Kristen,
It's good to hear from you. I really enjoyed your posts about d'Anver type on the club website. This is my first year breeding so my birds do need some work. The millies are young but, I used a rooster that didn't have many spots to try an limit the amount of white on them. They are a little big but I have a better, smaller rooster for next year. It is the first cross on the buff columbians. so they need some cleaning up. All my silver stuff came from a split S/s+ rooster. I hatched a couple pure ones from Aubrey's eggs so next year should be a good one for the silver stuff. The blue stuff all came out of some splash quail Ideal hatchery stock, so they need some type and color corrections. But all in all I am happy with where I am at. Again good to hear from you.

Cyn-- next to the last picture the one standing behind the hen looks suspicious.

Good Evening. Long time since I posted over here. HAve been crazy busy building housing for the chickens.

So my wonderful D'anvers from BBB, are 11 weeks. I have a obviously porcelain roo, and a porcelain pullet. The only 2 I got. I am blessed with a pair. Now my Millies are all soooo sweet, but I cant see any signs of a roo. That porcelain has a huge comb, crows and is trying to breed everything. These are all the same age. So is it possible that I only got the one roo out of all those chicks. I got 15 total. Now there is one goldneck that might have a comb developing, but no one else seems to have any comb.

Thoughts? IS it still early and the combs may still develop, and that beautiful porclain is way ahead?

JJ, you crew sure is looking good. I bet you are loving the housing.

Thanks, Kris. I would think at 11 weeks the roosters should be obvious.

JJ, thanks, wow, so all I have is a porclain, maybe a gold neck cockeral. Never would have thought that coujld happen. Here I was worrying what to do with the extra cockerals, now I might have to find one. I have time.

I will try to get pictures of them all, but they are so hard to take, when they move around so much, and all those millies want on my lap and held.
