Dapple Daschund Question

Put less rudely, it's a good thing you are researching these things before you breed.

Do you have a breed mentor?

What has your female done to be worth breeding?

What genetic tests have you had done?

Titles?

Those are all important things to consider prior to breeding.

When you say that lady I am assuming that you are talking about me. I am sure that lots of people have not heard of this
problem and when I did i posted so that i could find out about it. There is no need to be so rude about it.

Thank you redhen. That is why I posted. I like to no what I am doing and not jsut jump into it.

RabbitMage,I used to breed dogs years ago so I do no what I am doing but never this breed so I am doing my homework
first.
And you ask what has my female has done to be worth breeding- She has filled our home with tons of love!!!!

I also have friends that want one of her. LOL!!

Filling your home with love is wonderful. There is no lack of other Dachshunds in shelters that can do the same, though. You should consider having your girl spayed and direct your friends to somewhere like http://www.petfinder.com, where they might be able to help save a life.

That's all fine and dandy, but I'm sure she knows about shelters and getting dogs spayed.
How about we stop jumping on people for asking questions? Merle is a hard gene to learn about, especially at first. We're here to help, not pass judgement. This is supposed to be a friendly, helpful environment because the mods try VERY hard to keep it nice here. I go to other forums and none are as well managed as this one. (in my opinion) How are we supposed to learn anything new except to ask? We don't tell children they are stupid for not knowing why the sky is blue, and why fish can't play outside of water. Should we tell a adult that he/she is ridiculous for asking why chicks need a heat lamp? It's all a learning process.
I think it's great to "fix" dogs and I totally get why its important and all the benefits from it (as do lots of the regulars here), almost all my dogs are fixed. But if I could have bred my mutt Aussie before she died so unexpectedly I would have. I so would have loved to keep one of her babies. Maybe that's the reason she wants to (maybe) breed her dog? If she has people that would take the other pups, I think that's fine too. They'd have homes right?
I respect all the people that post here because you all know so much and have many experiences to share. And I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, I mean this as generally as possible. Please be aware of how your words may sound to someone else, there is a nice way and a mean way to just about everything.

edit for typo

EXCELLENT post! I'd like to add that you sometimes do not know what you are getting with shelter animals, and most folks want to know up front and personally the parents of their future pets, ESPECIALLY if they are going to be childrens pets. Obviously this pup has made a name for herself and has a large extended loving family...even if it IS outside the showrings and such. Even when I pick a "free" mutt puppy, I won't if I can't see the parent/parents and their personality/demeanor. Who wants a dog with a nasty attitude and bad genetics? Looks like the OP is doing all the necessary homework to provide a quality family pet to some friends who have fallen in love with her pooch. Have at it!! That must be a very sweet pup you have to have made such a HUGE impression

Just for fun if anyone is interested in the merle gene:

http://www.germancoolies.com/Merle.html

I have two Coolies (and a blue merle Border Collie).
Both the Coolies are homozygous merles. One is deaf, the other is deaf and partially blind (and a little bit 'slow'). They are awesome dogs, but it is so not worth the risk to breed dapple to dapple (or whatever you wish to call that beautiful mottled pattern).

FWIW: Piebald

Extreme Piebald:

and, if you want to get really serious:

Enjoy!

Oh wow, that is some crazy stuff! I'll have to read it all closer after I sleep, things are starting to run together....
I learned about the merle genetics with Chihuahua's. Its something you have to be very watchful and careful with and I decided to not delve into- but I love learning genetics anyways.

Thanks Cindiloohoo, I feel that my posts are sometimes ignored or pushed to the side. Its nice to know someone out there actually read it.

I'm sure there's people that disagree with me, C'est la vie, but I don't intend to step on anyone's toes about it.
