Hi-
I bought this gigantic beautiful Brahma roo at our state fair this past fall. He was so huge I just had to have him. Brought him home and noticed that he had a funny gait to his walk, sort of like he was stomping his feet with each step. He stayed the same for several months. A few weeks later I noticed that his toenails were loose and falling off, and that his feet look a little swollen. And within the last week it looks like his feet are decaying....they have black tips on the toes and skin looks like it is starting to slough off. He has lost a lot of weight also.
I have tried to research it on the internet, but cant seem to find the answer....
It must not be contagious, as he has been with my hens for 4-5 months and they havent shown any signs at all.

I am devastated....I have gave him different types of antibiotics and vitamins hoping it would help, but nothing is working. I really hate to lose this boy, he is friendly and handsome, plus this breed is pretty hard to find in my area.
Anybody ever saw this before??
What is it and can it be treated??
Please help me!

No, I dont think it could have been frostbite at that time, he was born last spring and I bought him before there were any freezing temps around here....and the man I bought him from was local also.
I'm leaning more toward some type of genetic disorder, like maybe a circulation problem or maybe joint or bone problem...
the bones in his legs are really big, unusually big, especially his joints. Not swollen, just unusually big bones....
And there's probably nothing I can do for him...but I hate to let him just die without trying to save him!
-Hoping someone knows what it is and can tell me what I can do before its too late! Poor fella!

I read somewhere that muddy runs can cause foot problems for Brahmas... causing the loss of a toe in some cases. Could he have gotten too much mud clumped on his feathers?

I have seen a terrible case of mites I think it was that caused some very bad problems for a chickens feet on here. There were pictures on the post.

here is the thread... check it out maybe it will help.

Yuck!
I checked out the mite photos but they dont look like his feet. I had a chicken years ago that had a mild case of scaly leg, which I promptly treated. His case isnt scaly leg. His scales still lay flat on his legs and arent crusty. They are turning grayish black on the tips of his toes and the skin is sloughing off on his feet. I'm sure they hurt pretty bad.
It has been muddy here with all the rain we've had this winter, but he hasnt had a lot of it clumped on his feet or feathers. I am just wondering why he has always had a weird walk...and now he dont really want to walk much at all with his feet sore. I've had chickens all my life, but have never seen anything like this...

Maybe someone can identify it soon before it gets too late.....which will be soon....

Hmmm... where are they
???? Do you have any pictures... it helps if you add pictures and post that in the topic.

Maybe soak his feet in warm water with epsom salt? I have no idea. Sorry.
