Dark brown egg layers

I'm looking to purchase a couple hens that are good tempered, but most importantly I am looking for hens that will lay the darkest brown egg you can possibly find. What breeds should I try to get?

Marans defiantly! Delwares and welsummers are also good. Be sure to tame them while they are young.

I strongly suggest getting Black Copper Marans, they lay over 200+ dark chocolate brown eggs a year. They are also very quiet birds, and are rare, if you would like to show them.

Ok thanks! I'm going to a chicken sale this Saturday, have either one of you heard of black jersey giants? I heard they lay super huge brown eggs. But I will let y'all know what I end up bringing home!

I love my Welsummers for their dark and/or speckled eggs.

I've heard of them, but never really researched them at all. Now that I have, hmm, maybe I'll get some for my flock.

Ok, thanks for all the advice! I think I will go with whatever they are selling, 1st choice is marans, and then welsummers or jersey black giants or Delawares. Any idea what the going price for any if these breeds as a pullet is?

It generally varies from 1-8 dollar(s) per chick. It depends on the store and state.

Also, anybody have or have had black austorlorpes? Do they lay dark eggs? And are they good layers?

Black australorps are awesome layers. They are friendly and docile. They lay light brown eggs though.
