Dark Egg Breeds Thread

I remember you saying that and understand making a complicated layout sometimes just needs to go in the trash. Easier to rebuild than take apart.
Arielle, I am trying to work a wire bottom egg tray into the nest, just think the eggs would be cleaner, By doing the wire bottom there will have to be a way to clean out underneath the tray. Eventually a six hole nest will be made from this , I am trying to get this all together before enlarging to six hole.

Hi Aarielle
no photos yet, and my flock is too young to lay, but I will most deffinitely get egg pics when the girls start laying. I no longer have my Barnies, but now have a flock of marans (bbs and a blue cuckoo pullet) along with 2 wellie puillets. It will be Oct or later before they lay, and I can't wait! Anyone got some photos to share?

My girls are being stingy with their eggs!!! One has gone broodie again and hogs the one nest box in the breeding pen. Fortunately, it doesn't stopthe other girls from squeeeeeezzziing in and leaving her an extra.

I have a few eggs going into the hatcher this weekend and next weekend!!!

THis hen laid a very dark speckled egg. It doesn't look like a marans to me. THe other dark egg layers, I don't know enough about to say if she is or is not a wellie or penne.

What is she?

With the feather shafting, whiteish ear lobes and non-feathered shanks, I would say she has Pene in her, maybe a cross of Pene and Welsummer? Can't see her comb too well, but it has the signs of a mix of the two, or even some Marans in there??

Hey Arielle got your message. I still have my original 2 FBCM girls. They will be two years old soon. They've been excellent layers and broodie mommas as well. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I never got a FBCM roo they just run with my Lav. Orps, and once with an EE roo to create a OE which they did. The egg buyers love their dark eggs:)

OE eggs are very pretty eggs !! You must have a wonderful selection of eggs now , between the two BC hens and their daughters.

Which gave you bigger eggs the EE father or the AM roo?

My girls are often broodie and very sensitive to light, or the lack of! Sounds like your girls have done well as broodie mommas.
