Dark Egg Breeds Thread

A PERFECT egg!!! Gorgeous.

My girls started laying this week!!! THe black copper marans and a blue copper maran. THe egg color on the blue copper is wonderful. Will start another pen using her.

I took a few photos but I noticed it is very difficult to take an accurate photo.

Definitely need a color card to show the actual color.

Well...Our 36 week old Wellsummer finally started to lay! While her eggs are not as dark as the Maran they are huge and they do seem to be getting darker every day.

has anyone used or use any kind of sanding method for shipped dark eggs?
I am trying to locate info on it.
I am having horrible luck with shipped penedesenca eggs.
out of the last 12 white empordanesa 3 developed 1 pipped but never got out of the shell.
Any ideas?
I read on a Maran's site that some dark eggs benefit from lower humidity and a degree higher heat.

At the very least, sanding would remove the bloom, which I try not to do.

Try the dry hatch method. It works with my Marans eggs. I usually put just a little water once a week, or don't put any water in during the first 19 days. Then go for 70% the last 3 days.;

Quote: REnee posted the info on sanding the eggs-- and using dilute iodine ( as I remember) cleaner to keep the eggs clean and sanitized. I have tried sanding on my shipped eggs; the best hatch was from a group of pale colored eggs, the darker eggs gave me a lower hatch rate. ( OTher factor could have been at play here: two different farms, late fall v summer)

THe sanding technique is hard to find since it was removed from the first post of the Easter Hatch a long. Too bad as it was great info. I'm sure I could locate it as Renee sent me a pM with a link. PM me if you want me to try to find it.

My impression is the coating is rather thick and effects the gas flow across the shell, IDK
